Norway GlommaDyppen 6k 🇳🇴
OUSC and Oxford University Triathlon
took on this open water challenge.
Here is Zoe’s race recap:
~~~
What was supposed to be a chill downstream swim turned into the weakest current they’ve had in years, plus a headwind bringing plenty of chop and waves. Still, such a fun swim and great results from everyone:
🥇 Sophie Lawrence - 1st overall (beating all the men too!!)
🥈 Pascale Wehr - 2nd
4️⃣ Me — 4th
5️⃣ Caterina Vanelli Coralli - 5th
Not quite the downstream float I was expecting but a super fun day with a great group!
Yangyang is combing her passion for research and cycling.
You can read more about her project below!
~~~
Hey all! I am yangyang7755 . A triclub member since 2024. During the start of my DPhil in Clinical neuroscience I had an objective of studying the relationship between pain and reward. Unlike our general conception of painful things lead to aversiveness and negative connotations, we are looking in how self-inflicted pain e.g. exercise can lead to a sense of reward and achievement when we voluntarily undergo through it. To study this, I needed to record human brain activity in people during action, especially when you are pushing yourself hard through difficult and even painful situations. However, as we are doing EEG (electroencephalography), highly affected by motion artifact, this meant that a lot of sports like running and jumping were immediately discarded. This is when biking came in as the ideal sport to study this.
The current setup uses a mosaic array of 5 big screen to showcase the cycling environment, while we measure participants HR, EMG (muscle activity) and EEG (brain activity) and ask them to rate their pain and reward in real time.
Also, interestingly, my first road bike was acquired when I was designing this experiment, which started a whole new journey of me joining the triclub and becoming a keen road cyclist to this day.

Do we take beginners? Yes we do!!
We think it’s really important for the club to welcome those new to the sport.
We hope these answers and photos from our members help you feel more confident showing up to your first session.
We will also have some novice specific sessions in Michaelmas.

OUTriC 2026-2027 Committee
Swipe through for everyone’s individual bio. 💙
President - Non Watts
Hey, I’m Non, a 4th year language student and current President of OUTriC. The club has been an integral part of my Oxford journey - I have loved meeting the most amazing people and discovering what the Oxfordshire countryside has to offer. Having swum and cycled competitively between 10 and 18, OUTriC has helped me foster a love for running that seemed almost impossible during my teenage years. I look forward to another fun and successful year for us as a club, and I’m super excited for what the next year will bring. Please don’t hesitate to get in contact with me with any of your questions, or come say hi at a training session!
Secretary - Joshan Davies
Hi, I’m Josh, a 2nd year Geographer. I love triathlon as it’s a great excuse to eat any and everything in sight (ignoring dairy, gluten, or my ability to process either). Another great thing about triathlon is there’s always something you can learn from your fellow triathletes; for me that’s mainly when swimming! I’m the secretary this year, so I’ll be coordinating races as well as helping out with admin bits around the club! If you have questions, drop me a message.
Treasurer - Hallee Lou
Hello, I’m Hallee, a 2nd-year undergrad studying physics at Univ! I only started doing triathlons in my first year in Oxford and have loved every second of it (maybe not the Thursday morning swims during winter). The club is super friendly and welcoming, which gave me tons of confidence as a first-timer. I was a recreational runner/cyclist before joining the tri club and only started swimming seriously last year, so it’s pretty reasonable that swimming is my least favourite of the three. Apparently, I’m known as the Monday-morning turbos enthusiast, so please come to turbos if you fancy seeing me sleep-deprived.
Men’s Captain - Ben Fuller
Hey, I’m Ben, a 1st-year DPhil student in physiology (starting in October), having done my undergrad here, making this my fifth year in the club. For me, triathlon is a great way to explore Oxford and the surroundings beyond the lab/library. Find me at a session or get in touch for any

On August 9th Cecilia Gallego took part in the Thames Marathon, a 13K swim from Henley to Marlow.
Here is their race recap! We’re really proud of Cecilia!!
~~~
Training for this swim was probably one of the hardest and most draining things I’ve ever done mentally, spending way too many hours in the pool every week.
However the race ended up being one of the most fun events I’ve ever done. The scenery along the river was stunning and in general the atmosphere was so fun and vibrant. I definitely will be doing this one a few more times (... As long as the water quality allows us)
I was so lucky because I had so many people helping me and supporting me on the day. Mag Adi and Ray Pedersen and my friend Hannah who I’ve known since A levels. I’m so so grateful for them.
After the race I’m feeling surprisingly good and energetic and I can’t wait to take on the next big swimming challenge
We walked 50km over Exmoor, traversing the first part of the Two Moors Way before spontaneously heading up to Scotland to race in an ULTRA X event.
Lucy bossed the 25km and Ella tore around the 12km dash. Nothing better than when training 🤝 adventure!!
Think your PhD research is fun, think again. 👀
This is how Liv is spending her summer!
~~~
I’m in Peru for a month doing fieldwork for my PhD. We’ve been doing interviews with communities to understand the impacts of drought on their agricultural activities and livelihoods. We’re also working together with NGOs and the communities to install weather stations and soil moisture sensors across a transect from the Andes to the Amazon to increase local data availability. It’s been an amazing few weeks, very busy but I’ve learnt so much and seen so many new things! This work will feed into the next 2 years of my PhD, as we work towards actionable drought early warning.

Do keep sending us your OUTriC summer updates.

Outlaw Holkam Half 2026
A lovely day with 4 OUTriC members competing.
A swim full of weeds + a shallow area where some people walked 😅
A fast day for Judd Katz, while he reported the bike to be “windy” that didn’t seem to stop him from absolutely flying through it.
A tough run course with mixed terrain.
Amazing performances by Arthur and Josh for both of whom this was their first 70.3.
A quote from Josh: “I had so much fun! It was my first half and definitely won’t be my last”
Thank you to all our supporters!! We couldn’t do it without you.
Sofya also got on the podium or something. Anyways. (This is Sofya writing this so she is very cringed out)

OUTriC Summer Updates!!!
Starting off with
Heya I’m Hallee a 2nd year physics student at Univ! Me and my friends finished the Camino de Santiago just a few days ago.
Starting from Porto and heading towards Santiago, we crossed the Portuguese-Spanish border on the dodgiest bridge imaginable and met countless beautiful people. We’ve also come across many historical churches and gorgeous natural scenery throughout the 10 days of walking.
For 2 of the days we chose to attempt 35km+ hikes. Walking under the heatwave was not fun at all, but the sense of achievement was sooo rewarding! Would definitely do this again for the majestic Santiago cathedral as well.
All in all it has been a fantastic experience and would definitely recommend people of all fitness levels to give it a go!
