Driving anxiety can feel confusing, frightening, and deeply isolating — especially when it appears after years of confident driving. I know exactly what it feels’ like to have years of confident driving and in the ‘blink of an eye’ feel all of it drain away.

Like many women I developed driving anxiety following a panic attack at the wheel, but others develop it by witnessing an accident, or being involved in a collision, even if they previously drove without a second thought.

One of the most distressing aspects of driving anxiety is not understanding what is happening in your body. A common fear I hear from clients is:

“What if I faint while driving?”
“How do I know this isn’t something medical?”
“What if I lose control on the motorway?”

This fear often leads to avoidance — first motorways, then dual carriageways, and eventually driving altogether. Your comfort zone gets smaller as anxiety convinces you there is danger everywhere. It can feel especially difficult if you have experienced fainting at one point in your life. The anxiety about fainting at the wheel can be amplified by your past experience it.

Understanding the difference between panic attacks and fainting (vasovagal syncope) is a crucial step in overcoming driving anxiety and rebuilding confidence.

The belief that drives everything I do is that driving anxiety isn’t about pushing through and driving more, it’s about finding the balance between that part you that is scared and that part of you used to feel confident driving

I got tired of seeing exposure therapy as the answer and more women having panic attacks, terrified of getting in the car the next day. Me again therapy exist because too many women suffer in silence, thinking they are the only ones who have lost their confidence to drive.

Driving anxiety isn’t something to hide and it is possible to overcome it in a big way!

I teach anxious drivers how to how to reduce their anxiety and increase their confidence to cope on any road. You leave with life long skills meaning there are more confident and capable women drivers keeping our roads safe!

I am the biggest cheerleader to you enjoying driving that you didn’t realise you needed!

I'm not shy at blowing my own trumpet but I'd much rather hear it from a wonderful female driver conquering the motorway one junction at a time.

Jodie has helped me to open up my world again, a world which had shrunk considerably due to driving anxiety - specifically motorways. Having always been a confident driver I found myself using avoidance and confined to short, familiar journeys, very rarely making it into fifth gear. I thought this type of anxiety was unique to me so was delighted to find Jodie with her expertise and skill set.

My sessions with Jodie were wonderful. She instantly put me at ease. I felt taken care of throughout. Listened to, understood, all without judgement. The pace of our sessions were such that I never felt hurried.

Jodie took the time to do a thorough assessment of my situation, discuss my goals and hopes and from there planned our sessions. She continually evaluated to make any tweaks needed. I was so grateful for this tailored approach.

It has been a relief to have a safe place with Jodie. My confidence and belief in myself has grown.

Turns out this girl can! I made it into fifth gear and even a couple of junctions on the motorway!

Another empowered driver making our roads safe!

Wouldn't it be liberating to get in the car and not have to consider ...

Is this a panic attack or am I about to faint?

But right now, the thought of getting in the car fills you with dread!

Rationally you know you can do it but when you approach busy traffic your hands start to sweat, your heart rate increases, you start to feel dizzy and you think you’re going to pass out.

The gap is almost never your logical mind… it’s your subconscious mind over protecting you, cranking up the physical symptoms “sweaty palms”, “faster heart beat” & “panic attacks” to get you to stop the thing it has perceived as dangerous. And even when you’ve been doing it all of your life, suddenly your body has other ideas and they get stronger the more you ignore them.

When you know that the answer lies with the subconscious mind and your nervous system feeling safe driving feels so much more doable. Even knowing the significant difference between panic and fainting can help you make a switch...

Today's blog clearly defines the difference between the two and what you can do to discover the root cause of driving anxiety...

You may know I’m a hypnotherapist helping anxious women drivers to conquer anxiety and take control of the road but here’s why I do it.

I care about women feeling confident in the car! I believe no women should be held back in life simply because they fear driving. I truly believe if you’ve experience driving anxiety and overcome it… you’re unstoppable

I want women know they don’t need to suffer in silence. When you used to be confident at driving and whether it slips away slowly or bang it’s gone over night we tend to keep it to ourself. We assume we are the only ones and that it’s something to be ashamed of

Having helped 100’s of women since 2020 I can tell you, you are not alone! If we asked every person driving the long way to work avoiding motorways I know we’d find the same answer, “I just can’t face motorways anymore.”

There are driving instructors happily being driven around town on a weekly basis. Not because the driver can’t drive but because they have lost their confidence to drive.

But here’s the real secret….

Driving anxiety is often misunderstood by partners, husbands, friends and driving instructors 🕺

It’s not as simple as getting in the car and driving more, often the physical symptoms of panic take over before your mind can get ahead of it. Imagine feeling dizzy and fearful of passing out and someone offering logic as the solution or suggestion you drive more!

It’s about reassuring that part of your mind and body that is trying to keep you safe so that you can focus on actually enjoying driving 🤪

It’s not about pushing through, it’s about accessing that over protective part of you, asking it to stand down so that you can have a little more fun.

Because anxiety is the fun police 👮🏼‍♀️

The road to driving freedom is trusting yourself enough to be brave enough to make small manageable changes in the right direction, reducing anxiety and increase joy, happiness and calm

Sounds simple when I say it like that doesn't it. nd it only sound that simple because I've spent the last 7 years helping anxious women drivers just like you...

So if you are tired of driving the long way home avoiding motorways, and you are ready to enjoy driving a little more as you take control of anxiety and start having more fun get in touch 💚 🚖 🌇

You want to be able to get in the car and enjoy driving without overthinking, worry and panic

But right now, the thought of getting in the car fills you with dread!

Rationally you know you can do it but when you approach busy traffic your hands start to sweat, your heart rate increases, you start to feel dizzy and you think you’re going to pass out

This block is almost never your logical mind… it’s your subconscious mind over protecting you, cranking up your visceral symptoms “sweaty palms”, “faster heart beat” & “panic attacks” to get you to stop the thing it has perceived as dangerous. And even when you’ve been driving all of your adult life, suddenly your body has other ideas

When you know that the answer lies with your subconscious mind and your nervous system feeling safe... driving feels so much more doable

This is exactly what I help with, I help your nervous system to feel safe and teach you how to cope when anxiety starts building so that you can feel in control and start to enjoy driving again!

Another Empowered Driver on the Road! 😎 🚙 🌇

I'm bursting with pride after guiding my latest client through the Me Again method. It was truly a joy to assist her in her journey from feeling apprehensive and afraid about getting behind the wheel to embracing her confidence and eagerness to hit the motorway once more.

Believe me, if I had mentioned to her a few months back that she would express those thoughts, she would have found it hard to believe (and I bet you would too).

However, with a compassionate and individualised 1:1 support that addressed her deepest fears and concerns at each step, she managed to transform her mindset about driving significantly, and most importantly, she now thinks about driving much less often.

Yet, as with many challenges, this was only a fraction of the issue. Perhaps you identify as an over-thinker (she definitely did), but your body often reacts instinctively before your mind registers fear.

Most anxieties are rooted in earlier life experiences (sometimes during seemingly unrelated periods)—times when your conscious mind dismissed them as insignificant, but your subconscious took note! That's what needed to be addressed.

Understanding emerged, emotions were released, and her shoulders felt lighter as her confidence blossomed. Over the weekend, I received a wonderful email sharing that she had driven on the motorway! 😎 🚙 🌇

During our final session, she expressed disappointment about not being able to do more due to a junction closure—can you believe that? 🙌🏻

If the idea of driving feels terrifying or if you experience sweaty palms and anxiety at the thought of being behind the wheel, you're in the right place and surrounded by others who understand.

Having conquered driving anxiety over 11 years ago myself, I know all too well the struggle. Since then, I've been dedicated to helping women like you build their confidence and release their fears, one journey at a time.

If you enjoyed reading about this brave woman’s transformation, drop a 💚 in the comments!
