More notes don’t automatically create better music.
Pentatonic scales may be among the first scales guitarists learn, but those same five notes can also produce incredibly sophisticated playing.
In this new video, I begin with one simple A minor pentatonic sequence and explore how changing its rhythm, direction, articulation and note order can generate an expanding collection of guitar licks.

Pentatonic Lick #4 is out 🎸
Here’s another way of developing one simple pentatonic idea.
This version splits the pattern into 4-note units and uses slides to move through different positions of the scale.
It’s a good example of how you can create completely new phrases without continually having to learn new shapes.

This one shows how changing the length of just one note can completely change the feel of a lick.
I sustain the first note, which shifts everything that follows and creates rhythmic displacement.

Pentatonic Lick #2 🎸
Sometimes, simply repeating part of a melodic sequence can make it much more interesting.
This lick repeats a three-note fragment to create an 11-note phrase that shifts across the beat. See if you can feel the rhythmic displacement!

FM3 Firmware 12 vs Firmware 13 – can you hear a difference?
For this listening test, I used four pentatonic licks and four different amp types. Each Firmware 12/13 comparison uses the same DI and settings, with no final processing added in Logic.
The licks are taken from my new Pentatonic Lick series – Lick 1 is available now, with the others coming to the free library over the next few months.
Listen on headphones if possible and let me know what you hear:

Don’t just memorise another guitar lick – learn how the idea works and use it to generate your own.
My new Pentatonic Lick series begins with a simple eight-note sequence using the familiar A minor pentatonic scale. Each new video will develop the original idea in a different direction.
