I’m always ready for tough conversations, especially with teenagers.
I mentor teens, so long before mine became teenagers, I was already immersed in their world. Still, nothing quite prepares you for the way their emotions, logic, and humour can shift from one minute to the next.
One thing I’ve learnt is that if you're an adult who isn't grounded, and you haven't mastered the art of protecting your energy instead of absorbing theirs, you’ll burn out very quickly.
Yesterday, I had one of those conversations.
Davian: Mummy, I used to trust you.
Me: That sounds like it's in the past. When did I lose your trust?
Him: When I was like one year old.
Me: Bruh! So at what point did you trust me if I lost your trust when you were one?
Him: When I was scrolling through your phone and I saw my baby pictures.
Me: I don't understand.
Him: Why was I so chubby? Didn't you know I would want to be fit and become an athlete? Why didn't you support my dreams early?
At this point, I started mentally reviewing every meal this child has eaten over the years, just to make sure I hadn't accidentally fed him something capable of rewiring his brain. Because what kind of conversation is this?
Me: Okay then, what should I have done better in that situation?
Him: Feed me less.
Me: Fair enough. I take the correction. It won't happen again next time.
Him: Next time???😁😁😁 That's rigged, Bruh! I was just rage baiting. Take a joke. It's so hard talking to older people. You all never understand young people's jokes.
Listen.
The emotional maturity it takes not to react, not to defend yourself, and not to start questioning every parenting decision you've ever made deserves an award.
Parenting teenagers is a daily combination of therapy session, stand-up comedy, debate club, and survival training. Some days you're helping them navigate real life issues. Other days you're being held accountable for baby fat they had over a decade ago.
The key is staying grounded enough to laugh, listen, and remember that not every conversation requires a serious response.
Sometimes, they're not looking for answers.
They're just testing the microphone. 🎤😂
