πΎ Could playing tennis help you live longer? π€πͺπ
We all know that tennis πΎ is great fun π, but research suggests it could also be one of the best activities for our long-term health πͺβ¨.
We came across some fascinating research recently, published in The Telegraph, highlighting that people who play tennis regularly have been associated with living an average of 9.7 years longer than those who don't exercise.
The same research found the longevity benefits were greater than those associated with jogging or regular gym workouts.
Another study of more than 110,000 people found that playing tennis was associated with a 15% lower risk of death.
Here are the many benefits of playing tennis:
β€οΈ Better heart health and fitness β Tennis combines short bursts of intense activity with recovery periods, helping to strengthen the heart, improve cardiovascular fitness and boost stamina.
πͺ Improved strength, balance and bone health β Sprinting, changing direction and weight-bearing movements help build muscle, strengthen bones and improve balance, helping us stay active and mobile as we age.
π§ Keeping the brain active β Every point involves quick decision-making, anticipation, strategy and hand-eye coordination. Research suggests this unique combination of physical and mental activity may help protect against cognitive decline and could reduce the risk of dementia by keeping the brain challenged and adaptable.
π The benefits of social connection β Tennis is a wonderfully social sport. Whether you're playing doubles, joining coaching sessions or enjoying a post-match chat, the friendships and sense of community can have a positive impact on mental wellbeing.
What makes tennis so special is that it combines physical exercise πͺ, mental challenge π€ and social interaction π€βall while you're having fun on court ππΎ.
Whether you're competing, playing socially or just picking up a racquet for the first time, tennis has something to offer at every age and ability.
So, what's your favourite thing about playing tennis? πΎ
We'd love to hear from you in the comments! ππ¬π
