AFC Abington

All good things must come to an end.

After 3 great years the team is folding.

We first became Still men yellows , and after winning the League 1 title and making 2 cup finals , we split out to AFC Abington.

We had 2 very steady seasons in the champ coming in the top half both times and reaching 2 Quarter finals in the 2 years.

Unfortunately the decision has been made and the lads will likely be looking elsewhere for next season.

Thanks to the Gaffa for all the behind the scenes work and thanks to all the players , it’s been a pleasure

It was league action against Oakley Diamonds who had started to find some form.

We were quick out the blocks, Dave wins the ball in the opponents box and puts us 1-0 in minute 1. Rhys plays through Andrews finishes nicely. 2-0

It was pretty much one way traffic till Phil decided to make things interesting and give away a pen, only to go and save it! Pittam won a pen of his own , only to hit his one wide.

Second half was more of the same , Billy cross found an Oakley defender who put it in , then Whitehead sent Dave on his way again who beat his man and finished well with his weak foot. Jack M finished off the scoring with a nice goal.

We should’ve really hit double figures today but with just the 12 men it was a great performance.

Credit to all the lads but MOTM was Dave , work rate was unmatched as usual and also bagged a brace.

Sunday saw the lads take on McPave in the Ro16 of the MT.

First half was quite even , we probably had the better chances and more attacks but they had more of the ball. Alix scored a goal which was weirdly ruled out for a foul. But it was Billy who got our goal,he shifted the ball and buried it in the bottom corner to go 1-0. HT

Second half and they took a lot more control , they were getting a lot of set pieces but we defended well. They managed to grab a goal after slight miscommunication at the back. We had a great chance up the other end to win it , but Hunty also cleared a ball off our line. They looked more likely to end up grabbing a winner but in the end it went to penalties.

Our 3rd Penalty shootout this year and after scoring 6/8 pens and Phil making 2 good saves we go 3/3 in shootouts this year.

Everyone put in a great shift, Phil was solid in goal, Pittam and Hunty were relentless but MOTM goes to the skipper , won every aerial duel and scored the winning penalty.

Into the quarters! But next up , league action.

❗️MATCH REPORT❗️

League game against Brafield who beat us last year , we turned up with 12 but still confident after recent results.

After 5 minutes we knew how this game was going to go, we had all the ball and they wanted to counter. We struggled at first to get the ball down but once we did some lovely play in midfield sent whitehead through, the keeper has cleaned him out and the balls fell to Deeks who’s put the ball through the scrambling defenders 1-0.

It’s safe to say we then turned off for 5, a 30yard shot from them found its way in and after the ref thought Dave’s slide tackle was a pass back , they had a freekick which deflected top corner. 1-2 down.

The last 15 of the half was the best we played , comfortably had all the ball and created numerous chances. It’s wasn’t till Jack M found himself in the box , chopped his man, and calmly finished passed the keeper . HT 2-2.

Second half and we came out quick , a first time ball from Billy sent Tom away , who lobbed the keeper first time. 3-2 and safe to say we were completely dominant this half , we missed 3 clear cut chances, but did pick up 2 goals after Deeks’ cross found Billy and Pittam taking on their whole team , winning himself a pen and tucking it away. Phil did also think he could take on their team which resulted in us making a goal line clearance , but apart from that they had nothing in the second half.

A confident display with some great football on show, still unbeaten in the new year.

Honourable mentions to Dave and Kempy who both played out of position and put in solid shifts , but MOTM is Jack M, bagged his first goal for the club, he should’ve had 2 but he also stopped their winger doing anything.

❗️March Report❗️

Last Sunday we faced North Star Reserves in what we knew would be a fiesty game.

They started much the better , kept the ball really well, winning every tackle and after about 30 minutes took the lead from a good cross into the box. We struggled to get out our half too much but on the occasions we did we came close to scoring. HT 0-1

Second half was completely different, they had ran out of gas and we had turned it on. We had more of the ball and were having some good chances. A great corner whipped in from Billy was headed home by our big lamppost! first goal of the season and hopefully we won’t have to wait another 5 months for more.

With all the momentum with us , wh**ey wanted to make it fair and got himself sin binned, we held out the 10 minutes and got back on the ball. Excellent work from Pittam sent Dave on his way , whose ball found Whitehead who finished calmly.

With only 12, the boys were flat out but everyone put in a massive shift. MOTM could’ve gone to many, Phil was solid in goal. Pittam has been putting in some great performances. But Hurley was great at the back and got the goal to get us back into the game!

After a week’s break , it looks like we have our MT cup game this weekend!

❗️MATCH REPORT❗️

On sunday we had the Abington Derby , looking to better our defeat in pre season.

We started off the better and had joy down the wings , Deeksy gambled on a wh**ey clearance and beating their keeper to the ball to tap in for 1-0. They started to take a lot more control of the game , found the right spaces and kept on playing the ball in behind. The majority we defended well, but twice the striker got in behind and was brought down first for a penalty. In which Phil excellently saved, then for a free kick on the edge which the player has smashed in. HT 1-1

Second half and we managed to stop them having all this control. Dave has got onto the end of a long ball, took a touch and smashed it top corner from 30 yards.

With having just 14 and a couple injuries in the game we couldn’t quite hold them out, Abington sent a nice through ball over the top and finished nicely. Dave did have 2 good attempts late on but both just wide.
Overall a very good game with lots of positives , especially after they beat us pre season.

Some really solid performances from all but MOTM was , he’s come in at right back and has looked very solid defensively and always looking to to play some nice football down the right hand side.

Credit to the other Abington, a good bunch of lads and a strong team!

❗️MATCH REPORT❗️

With a lot of No’s and a no show on the day, the lads turned upto Croyland Park with a bare 11.

We had the quicker start with some early chances and it wasn’t too long till we made the breakthrough. Just like our last goal of 2025 , 2026 started with a Joe Deeks freekick whipped in for the skipper to head into the top corner. They enjoyed moments with the ball but their only big chance of the half was stopped by Phil as he bravely read the square pass. HT 0-1

We knew they would start quicker in the second half , and they did that but with no real threat on goal , the back 4 stood firm.
Another set piece for us and this time the ball pinballed around before Andrews stabbed it in.

Croyland heads have now dropped, after a set back from a throw, Jack M crosses into the box for Billy to acrobatically smash the ball home for what is likely to be our goal of the season.

We finished with a flurry of chances, but we topped it off after Billy was sent through to square the ball across to the awaiting Andrews and Grant , only for the latter to nip in and tap home for his second of the day.

Phenomenal performance from the whole 11, everyone worked their socks off and a well needed run out after nearly a month off.
The defence was excellent, the midfield ran endlessly and the attack were constant threat, but MOTM is .rryaa , they just couldn’t cope with his physicality and worked himself to the ground!

Eyes now look ahead to the Abington Derby next week!

Happy New Year ! And hope everyone had a great Christmas

Before the Christmas break we had the long trip over to Naseby, a win would secure us top spot.

We took the early lead through Jamie following a knock down off a throw in. We dominated early on. Dave was very harshly sin binned as he asked the ref a question, Wh**ey was then rightly sin binned seconds later. Down to 9 men in which Naseby grabbed themselves a goal. Dave returned on the pitch, and a through ball from Andrews sent him on his way, he’s shot from 30 yards but no one in the fog could see if it had gone in . It did 1-2 HT.

Naseby battled on , they got themselves a corner in which we knew they would be good, and we are poor at, and then got themselves a goal.

By now the pitch was ruined, and not a lot of football could be played , we had a freekick which Deeks has whipped in near post for Grant to flick it in between his legs to take our lead back. Naseby equalised again after a 30 yard shot just went over our Stand in Keepers hand.

FT 3-3 , on a different day (and different ref) it’s probably a win. But Naseby are a decent set up and good bunch of lads who welcomed us back to the pub after. 🤝

MOTM was he’s been excellent since he’s been playing RB and he continued that form in this game.

Back to league action after sitting top of our MT group.

Last 16 of the Nene Cup and we faced up against KA.

It probably wasn’t the best idea to have our Christmas do the night before but nonetheless we started much the brighter side. Andrews up front causing all sorts of issues! Hurley came close from a corner then 2 minutes later Andrews scored from one ! We continued to apply the pressure, Dave got in behind and squared to Ali who couldn’t convert, Billy had 2 free kicks just wide. It was a pretty comfortable half baring a long KA throw in which was just about cleared but we massively regret not going 2/3 goals clear. HT 0-1

Second half and KA came out flying , were stronger into tackles and got on the ball more. Against the run of play Andrews intercepted a back pass, squared to Ali who’s shot is going top corner , only for the KA cb to clear with a flying header , was an unbelievable stop. They realised their only joy was from Throw ins , and it worked for them, 2 goals off the back of throw ins where we have failed yet again to clear second balls. We attempted to get an equaliser , Jack A had a shot which was yet again cleared off the line with a header, but whilst we pushed men forward they countered and grabbed a 3rd .

We did grab one goal back through Rhys following a Stratz corner. We seem to be good at attacking set pieces but defensively we have to improve.

Credit to KA , they played the pitch and the conditions better than us in the second half and managed to get the win! So good luck to them in the next round !

MOTM was .rryaa back being a menace for the opposing defenders , and grabbed himself the opener.

Our final game of the year is back in the MT where we look to finish top of our group !
