Bangor-on-Dee | River Clean

It was a pleasure once again to support The Dee Trust with their monthly River Dee clean.

A HUGE thank you to all our brilliant volunteers who rolled up their sleeves and did some serious picking!

Among this month’s haul were silage wrap, fishing line, disposable BBQs, tyres, numerous shoes, racecourse barriers… and plenty more that definitely .

Everything we collect is recorded and helps build a detailed picture of where litter in the River Dee is coming from. We now have four years of data, helping us better understand the problem and where action is needed.

Keep an eye out for details of our next river clean and social in September. Come along, get stuck in and help us look after the Dee.

MEET CAZ…

Chief paddler, brew maker, adventure planner and the woman behind SUP Lass Paddle Adventures.

If I’m not on a paddleboard, there’s a fair chance I’m on my road bike, talking about farming or planning another trip to Scandinavia…

A few things about me…

• I’m happiest on the water — rivers, estuaries, coast, white water or somewhere wild with everything strapped to my board.

• I’ve been lucky enough to paddle and guide in some incredible places, from North Wales to Sweden, Norway and the Peruvian Amazon.

• When I’m not paddling, I work in rural tourism and farm diversification — basically, I love local food, interesting people and brilliant ideas.

• Off the water, I can regularly be found pedalling around North Wales on my road bike, questioning why I chose a route with quite so many hills.

• I’m a big believer that you don’t need to be the fastest, fittest or bravest person in the room to have an adventure. Sometimes you just need someone to say “come on, give it a go.”

And that’s really what SUP Lass is about.

Getting people outside. Building confidence. Learning new skills. Having a laugh. Exploring beautiful places. And occasionally getting a little bit wet.

Yesterday we were joined by Mandy, Nicola, Nikki, Will, Amy and Sarah for a day exploring the mighty Mawddach Estuary. And what a cracking day it was!

With the mountains of Eryri as our backdrop, we headed out onto the estuary for a day of paddling, exploring and putting skills into practice. Plenty of laughs, some beautiful stretches of water and, of course, an essential Knickobockers ice cream.

The Mawddach has to be one of the most spectacular places to paddle in North Wales. Mountains tumbling down to the water, big skies and that wonderful feeling of being on a proper 10km journey rather than simply going for a paddle.

A fabulous bunch of paddlers, great company and another day that sums up exactly why we love doing what we do.

Sundays on the Dee… be like!

I first met Julie and Anne at the weekend hosted by Plas Y Brenin, when they joined one of my sessions full of enthusiasm and keen to learn more.

And they clearly meant it!

Having already ticked off a 15km stretch of the Dee, last Sunday they came back for Part 2 — this time bringing Anne’s daughter Amy along for the adventure — and another 22km of river.

And what does 22km on the Dee look like?

• Plenty of paddling
• Discovering water only accessible by paddleboard
• Essential wild brew stops
• Slowing down for Pip cuddles
• And an incredible 11 kingfisher sightings!

Those flashes of electric blue darting low across the water were definitely one of the highlights.

Days like this are exactly why I love what I do — watching people build their skills and confidence, enjoy being outside and discover just how much fun a proper river journey can be.

The only question now is…

Will Julie and Anne be back for Part 3?
