🔴 MATCH REPORT | Aberfan Women FC 6–1 Canton Ladies FC 🔴
Today the women played their first home game of the season back at The Grove, and it’s always good to be home! ❤️
In true Aberfan fashion, the heavens opened for our return to The Grove! 🌧️😂
Before kick off, both teams paid their respects to Bobby Twin, who was such a huge character within our club. Both teams stood alongside our supporters for a minute’s silence to show our respect, which was a lovely and fitting touch.
Then the whistle went, and we came out like sprinters off the blocks! ⚡
We sprung straight into action and got down to business early. Our strong start was rewarded after just 5 minutes, with Lucy Sullivan opening the scoring after a lovely assist from Alicia Daley.
We didn’t let up and stayed firmly on the front foot. On the 13th minute, Tabs Ryan doubled our lead after a nice link up with Krystal Rees, which some might say was ironic considering Tabs wears the number 13 shirt! 😂
Canton were struggling to find a way out of their own half as Aberfan continued to dominate possession and territory. The work we’ve been putting in at training was really starting to show, with the girls moving the ball around with confidence and purpose.
That pressure paid off again when Tabs Ryan played Lucy Sullivan through, and Lucy calmly found the back of the net for her second of the afternoon.
Then, right on the stroke of half-time, Hannah Thompson sent a long ball over the top to Lucy. Lucy controlled it with a touch of class before once again finding the back of the net to complete her hat-trick.
Half Time: Aberfan 4–0 Canton
The second half began at a fast pace once again, and Lucy Sullivan continued to show her technical ability and real class in front of goal, slotting home her fourth goal of the game in the 47th minute. 🔥
As the second half progressed, we did allow Canton some spells of possession and they looked to hit us on the counter attack. A few little mistakes started to creep into our play, which played into Canton’s hands, and they managed to get a few shots on target.
Unfortunately, one small error allowed Canton to steal a goal and get themselves on the scoresheet.
But we weren’t going to let that knock us off our stride.
The girls reacted well, stood strong and continued to see the game out professionally.
Then, late in the dying minutes, Danielle Davies fed a lovely ball through to Evie Lynch , who kept her composure to secure her first goal in an Aberfan shirt! ❤️⚽
FULL TIME: Aberfan Women FC 6–1 Canton Ladies FC
A truly dominant performance from the girls and a fantastic way to open our season at The Grove.
It was also a really good game for us to analyse and learn from. There are areas we’ll continue to work on, but we’re seeing tremendous growth in so many parts of our game.
We’re establishing our style of play and, more importantly, we’re really starting to see the progression and development within this team. That is fantastic to watch. 👏
🏆 PLAYER OF THE DAY — LUCY SULLIVAN
Technically brilliant yesterday. Lucy made important runs, delivered important crosses and passes, and her ability to read the game and pick the right pass was superb.
And, of course, four goals to top it all off! 🔥⚽⚽⚽⚽
A fantastic performance, Lucy! 👏
Next week, we’re back on the road as we travel to Aberaman.
The girls will carry this important win with them, but we know there is still plenty of work to do. We’ll continue working hard, improving and pushing forward together as we look to keep the momentum going.
Finally, a massive thank you to all of our sponsors this season. Your support makes it financially feasible for our girls to be properly kitted out and allows us to continue developing this team.
And, as always, a huge thank you to our supporters for getting behind the women and creating such a brilliant atmosphere at The Grove.
Bobby This one was for you ❤️
