4 year old Frankie in his new GFS PX Jump saddle. have a changeable gullet bar, which is useful for a young horse because their shape is likely to change considerably as they grow, develop muscle, and start working.

The tree shape, panel length, curvature, balance and clearance all still need to be taken into consideration for a saddle to fit correctly. However, if all of these elements are suitable, a changeable gullet bar can certainly help a saddle accommodate some of the changes a young horse goes through, potentially allowing it to fit for longer during their younger years.

Why saddle size isn’t always as simple as the number suggests!

The first photo shows a 17” Fiona Cork saddle, while the second shows a 16.5” GFS saddle. Despite the GFS being labelled as the smaller seat size, you can clearly see that it has a longer overall footprint and comes further back on the horse.

In this case, the GFS is simply too long for this particular horse.

I am often asked, “What size saddle does my horse need?” but this is a great example of why saddle fitting can’t be determined by seat size alone.

Different makes and models can vary considerably in their overall length, panel shape, tree design and how the saddle sits on the horse. Two saddles with the same, or even a different seat size can have very different dimensions and fit very differently.

It is a little like clothing, a size 10 in one brand doesn’t necessarily fit the same as a size 10 in another!

When assessing saddle fit, we therefore need to look at the whole saddle and how it interacts with the individual horse, rather than relying solely on the number stamped on the saddle.

Why choose a serge panel? 🤎

Serge panels offer a number of benefits, including excellent breathability and moisture management, helping to keep the horse’s back more comfortable during work.

Serge is a natural, breathable material and whilst it will absorb moisture and sweat it dries out very quickly allowing the flocking inside to retain its natural softness.

The soft, textured surface can also help minimise friction and provide a secure, close-contact feel between horse and saddle.

As always, the panel material is only one part of the bigger picture — correct fit, width, length, tree points, panel shape, balance and even weight distribution are all key to keeping both horse and rider comfortable. 🐴✨

The All Rounder fitted to the gorgeous Orla today 🤎

Orla is a small Cob with a bigger rider, so we opted for the All Rounder to help accommodate her big shoulders, with a shorter panel and upswept rear gusset to suit her shorter back. We also went for a larger seat to give her rider the space and comfort they need.

Previously, her rider had tried a saddle that was the correct size for the pony, but too small for her. This meant the rider’s weight was sitting towards the back of the saddle, rather than being evenly distributed throughout the seat.

The new saddle gives the rider the space they need, allowing them to sit more centrally and distribute their weight more evenly, while still being appropriately fitted to Orla’s shorter back and bigger shoulders.

A great example of why saddle fit needs to work for both horse and rider. 🤎
