Aging Hotly by VVR Fitness Hi! I'm Vanessa. Online Fitness Coach. I completed my first HYROX one year after a hip replacement - and have since gone Pro. I'm 51, AuDHD, and peri-menopausal.

I coach women who are not done yet. We are Aging Hotly.

51, and apparently this is the stage of life where I’ve decided to do more, not less 😂

The last couple of years have involved a lot of change, a lot of rebuilding, and quite a few “why not?” decisions.

I changed careers.
Started coaching.
Started working at a bootcamp.
Started judging fitness events.
Soon to be HYROX Head Judge.
I’ve run a half marathon, marshalled events, raced, paddled, lifted, climbed, fallen over occasionally and generally kept finding new things to have a go at.

I’m a mum of three.
I’m pescatarian.
I don’t drink alcohol.
I do eat muffins.
I train hard, but I don’t believe fitness needs to come with miserable food, endless restriction or making your whole life revolve around being “good”.

Food is fuel.
Food is also meant to be enjoyed.

And training, for me, is about much more than how I look.

I want muscle.
I want strength.
I want performance.
I want a body that lets me keep doing interesting things for as long as possible.

That’s really what Aging Hotly means to me.

Not trying to look 25.
Not desperately fighting ageing.

Just refusing to assume that getting older means becoming less capable, less adventurous, less ambitious or less visible.

I’m 51.

I’m not winding down.

I’m building. 💜

Yesterday my posing coach asked if I wanted to wait until my hip felt better before we carried on with posing.

It was a completely reasonable question.

But I found myself saying:

“The thing is, my hip isn’t going to get better. I have arthritis.”

And it got me thinking.

That sounds quite negative written down. But I don’t actually mean it negatively.

It’s acceptance.

I can manage it. I can adapt around it. I can choose what’s worth doing and what isn’t. Some days I can do more than others.

But if I keep waiting for a future version of my body where nothing hurts and everything works perfectly before I do the things I want to do…

I could spend an awful lot of my life waiting.

I have arthritis AND I’m an athlete.

I can be in pain AND be incredibly strong.

I can have limitations AND still have big goals.

For me, training isn’t about pretending those limitations don’t exist. It’s about understanding them, respecting them and working with the body I have.

Acceptance isn’t resignation.

And perhaps strength isn’t always about overcoming something.

Sometimes it’s about saying:

*This is where I am. So what can I do from here?*

That’s the kind of strength I want women to build 🔥

What’s your AND?

Bulgarians Split Squats are hard enough.

I take my shoes off for a more stable base…then realise I’ve placed my toes directly beneath a heavy dumbbell 🫣

Suddenly grip strength has never mattered more 😂

But I suffer through them for good reason.

Bulgarian split squats build:

🔥 Glutes and quads through a lovely, horrible range of motion
🔥 Single-leg strength for running, stairs and lunges
🔥 Hip, knee and ankle stability
🔥 Balance and control
🔥 Grip strength too, if you’re holding dumbbells and praying

One dumbbell or two? Shoes on or off? Or are you also holding on for dear life?

Drops. Powders. Sachets. Creams.

I bought the collagen promises…and apparently there are rather a lot of them 🫣

So I’ve gone looking at what the evidence actually says.

Welcome to…Collagen: Hot or Hype?🔥

Have you taken collagen? And if so, what were you hoping it would do?
