Reports suggest Joe Root is being considered as England's next Test captain, potentially succeeding Ben Stokes. If that happens, one of England's greatest modern batters could be set to lead the team into a new era. However, these reports remain speculative, and there has been no official confirmation. ๐

England completed an important four-wicket victory over India in Cardiff, successfully chasing 234 and levelling the three-match ODI series at 1โ1 ahead of the deciding match at Lordโs.
It was a valuable team victory, but the match ended with Joe Root unbeaten on 99 from 133 deliveries, creating one of the most interesting cricket debates of the series.

India appeared capable of producing a much bigger total after reaching 178/3.
Virat Kohli played a composed innings of 65, while Shreyas Iyer top scored with 66. However, Englandโs bowlers applied the pressure brilliantly, and India lost their final seven wickets for only 55 runs to finish on 233 all out in 44 overs.
Jofra Archer led the attack with 3/47, while Gus Atkinson claimed 3/50. Saqib Mahmood added two wickets, with Sam Curran and Will Jacks also contributing to Englandโs impressive bowling recovery.

Englandโs chase began badly.
Ben Duckett was dismissed from the first ball, and England later slipped to 94/4. Jos Buttlerโs dismissal left them at 125/5, giving India a genuine opportunity to take control of the match.
But Joe Root remained calm while wickets fell around him.
He absorbed the pressure, trusted his defence and gradually rebuilt the innings. Will Jacks provided important support with 30, sharing a crucial 72-run partnership with Root before becoming Englandโs sixth wicket at 197.
Root had already scored 20 ODI centuries before this match, meaning one more run would have delivered his 21st ODI hundred. His unbeaten 99 also followed the 76 not out he scored in the opening match of the series.
This was not simply a player chasing a personal milestone. Root had once again held Englandโs innings together and taken his team to the edge of victory. He was deservedly named Player of the Match.

Gus Atkinson joined Root with England still requiring 37 runs and played an excellent attacking innings of 23 not out from 16 deliveries.
However, during the previous over from Gurnoor Brar, the strike might possibly have been managed differently. Root reached 99, but Atkinson took a single from the final ball, meaning he, not Root; would face the following over.
England therefore entered the next over needing only four runs from 36 deliveries, with four wickets still remaining and Root standing at the non-strikerโs end on 99.
Prasidh Krishna began with a wide, reducing the requirement to three. India then appeared to bring the field up to make an easy single difficult.
Atkinson was left with a straightforward but awkward decision: defend the ball and attempt to leave the following over for Root or attack any loose delivery and complete the victory immediately.
Prasidh bowled short.
Atkinson reacted naturally, played the pull shot and sent the ball to the deep-square-leg boundary.

To be fair, Atkinson did nothing wrong.
Winning the match must always remain the first priority. He received a short delivery, recognised the scoring opportunity and safely completed an international victory. He had also produced an excellent all-round performance by taking three wickets and scoring an unbeaten 23.
Root himself showed no anger and made it clear afterwards that securing the victory was what mattered most.
However, supporters are still entitled to ask whether England could have achieved both objectives.
They had six overs remaining, four wickets in hand and their match-winning batter sitting on 99. The required run rate was no longer a concern, and there appeared to be enough time to manage the strike more carefully.

At Lordโs in 2011, Angelo Mathews scored only one run from 21 balls, deliberately giving Dinesh Chandimal as much strike as possible. Chandimal completed his maiden ODI century, finishing on 105 not out, before Sri Lanka secured victory.
During the 2014 T20 World Cup semi-final, India needed only one run to win. MS Dhoni defended the final ball of the over, allowing Virat Kohli, the batter who had controlled the chase to return to strike and score the winning runs himself.
There is also the opposite example of Alex Tudor in 1999. Tudor played an extraordinary innings against New Zealand but finished on 99 not out when England completed their successful chase. That missing century is still remembered decades later.

England won the match and that will always be the most important part of the story.
Root produced another outstanding innings under pressure. Atkinson contributed brilliantly with both bat and ball and finished the match when the opportunity arrived.
But with so many deliveries and wickets remaining, could the strike have been managed differently so that Root received one final opportunity?
Perhaps Atkinson simply reacted to the short delivery in front of him.
Perhaps the opportunity was lost during Gurnoor Brarโs previous over.
Or perhaps an international match should always be completed immediately, regardless of individual milestones.

๐ Day 1 Stumps | 3rd Test | Trent Bridge
What a fascinating opening day in the series decider!
New Zealand looked in complete control after Tom Latham (151) and Devon Conway (157) stitched together a magnificent 317-run opening partnership, putting England under pressure for most of the day.
But just when it seemed the visitors would finish with total dominance, England produced a superb late fightback. In the final 12 overs, the hosts removed all four left-handers in New Zealandโs top order, dragging themselves back into the contest.
๐ณ๐ฟ Stumps: 361/4 (84.1 overs)
A day that belonged to New Zealand for 72.1 oversโฆ but England will head into Day 2 believing theyโre still very much in this Test.
