Career Audit insight #5

Last Friday I had a thoroughly enjoyable Career Audit session with a former client who wanted to consider how to reposition himself in the market.

He began the session smiling and describing himself as the ant using the summer to prepare for winter.
Metaphors are common in coaching conversations and I rarely miss the opportunity to explore one further.

So, we stayed with it.
What kind of "winter" is he actually preparing for?
Will the market he plans to re-enter look the same 3-6 months from now?
What knowledge, skills and relationships does he need to build before then?
What can he do now that will give him a head start when everyone returns from their summer break?

By the end of the session he had a clear plan for the autumn and winter ahead.

Career Audit insight #4

It doesn't happen often, but this week there were tears at the end of a Career Audit session.
Happy tears.
A little overwhelm.
And a huge sense of relief.

The client said "It was all there. I just hadn't connected the dots."
The answer to "What’s next?" had been there all along. It was hiding in plain sight - too big, too scary to see as a real possibility.

She left unable to unsee that clarity.
And I placed that warm feeling that lingered after the session into a special mental drawer.

Career Audit insight #3

This week four different people opened a Career Audit conversation with the same words: "I feel stuck."
One of them asked whether this was something I heard often. "Of course", I said, "more often than not".

The feeling is incredibly common among people seeking career coaching. What differs is what lies behind each individual "I feel stuck".

Lack of direction?
Low confidence?
No visible opportunities?
Misaligned values?
Not recognising transferable skills?
An outgrown role or even organisation?

There is no one version of "I feel stuck".

That’s why Career Audit sessions never start with looking for solutions – we start by looking at what the real issue is.

Career Audit insight #2

This week I had an enquiry from a former HR colleague, now working in a new organisation.

We were discussing the challenges they face, particularly employee turnover among their millennial employees, and she shared that although lack of career development regularly features in their exit interviews, they don't actually know who really needs career coaching.

I’ve been there. I managed European talent development budgets for years.
There’s never enough budget to do everything. It’s always a balancing act between strategic priorities, leadership development programmes, mandatory training, top talent, and sometimes whoever shouts the loudest (let’s be honest).
Career development often ends up competing with every other priority.

But not everyone needs six coaching sessions.
Some people need reassurance.
Some need direction.
Some need confidence.
Some simply need the opportunity to step back, understand where they are today, and identify what's really getting in the way.
That's exactly how I think about Career Audit. It's 90 minutes of clarity. It’s not a coaching programme, but a structured career diagnostic that helps individuals gain clarity and organisations make better-informed decisions about where further investment will have the greatest impact.

Proposal sent, looking forward to working together again.

If you could see your whole career in a single snapshot, what would it tell you?

It might confirm what you've suspected for a while.

Or it might surprise you.

It could reveal that you're clear about your direction but not building the relationships that will help you get there.

Or that you've spent years focusing on your organisation's priorities, while putting your own aspirations on hold.

Or perhaps you've been working incredibly hard in your role, but not giving enough attention to your longer-term career.

Or maybe you're doing all the right things but without a clear strategy tying them together.

Whatever it tells you - clarity should always come before any action.

Whether I'm working with an individual exploring what's next or supporting an organisation investing in career development, the best outcomes always start with understanding the whole picture, because the right action depends on knowing where you are today.

This was one of the main drivers in training to become a licensed Career Counselling Services coach for Balance™ framework.

Rather than reducing career growth to a single challenge or a single solution, this evidence-based approach provides top level career view and identifies the career growth areas where attention is most needed and where the biggest opportunities for growth lie.

Looking forward to incorporating it into my Career Audit sessions and organisational career development work.

Career Audit Insight #1

This week's reflection came from a conversation with someone considering a Career Audit - a single, 90-minute deep-dive career coaching session. We found ourselves talking about how our generation has been approaching career management.

He pointed out that we service our cars every year and review our finances and tax. I added that we have regular health checks. Then we talked about how we're used to our organisations reviewing strategy, budgets and performance every year

But for something as important as our working lives, many of us go years without ever stepping back to review where our career is heading.

Of course, we change and our priorities change too. Not to mention the changes in the world of work. So how many small 'career health' warning signs, or maybe new opportunities, might we spot much earlier if we reviewed our careers in the same way?

Perhaps that's another example of career ownership.

Hopefully, over time, deep career reviews will become as normal as annual health checks or car servicing.

If you're using the summer to reflect on your career and make the most of a bit more downtime, I’ll be sharing some of the ideas and observations emerging from the Career Audits I'm running over the next few weeks.
We all learn from each other's thinking.

In the meantime, the first three Career Audits are booked for next week.

September is January for careers.

By the time autumn arrives, recruitment picks up, internal opportunities reopen, projects restart, and many people return from their summer break realising they don't want another year to pass without making a change.

The challenge is that most people arrive in September ready to react rather than prepared to act. Strategic career decisions require clarity, direction and a plan - and summer is often the ideal time to create that space to think.

So this summer I'm opening my Career Audit sessions to a wider audience. Bookings are now open for July and August.

WHAT IS IT?
A 90-minute, one-off career coaching session designed for experienced professionals who want to step back, assess where their career stands today, explore future possibilities, and leave with greater clarity and a practical action plan.
The session gives you the space to think strategically about your career, with no commitment to a longer coaching programme.

WHO IS IT FOR?
• You are feeling stuck, but can't see a clear way forward.
• You are considering a career move, but don't know whether it's the right one.
• You know you are capable of more, but your career isn't reflecting it.
• You are ready for your next step, but don't know what will get you there.
• You want to assess whether your current career path is preparing you for what's ahead.
• Your experience isn't translating into the right interviews or opportunities.

WHAT IS THE OUTCOME?
• A clear picture of where your career stands today
• A deeper understanding of your strengths, career assets and growth opportunities
• 2–3 realistic career directions to consider
• A practical 6–12 month action plan

HOW IT WORKS?
1. Email [email protected] with a few details about yourself and what you'd like to focus on.
2. Receive information on the session fee, availability and the booking process.
3. Complete a short pre-session reflection before the session.
4. Join your 90-minute Career Audit to explore:
o Where You Are Now
o Your Career Assets
o Future Direction
o Action Plan

Apart from a tan and a good rest, what would you like to bring into September?
More clarity? A clearer direction? Greater confidence? A practical plan?

Contexts differ, but personal agency always matters.

Although I work regularly with Serbian clients, last week was the first time I have delivered an open event for Serbian audience.

People joined from different generations, professions and career stages - a much broader mix than my usual clients and that was lovely to see.

Context always matters.

Economic conditions, labour markets, organisational realities, and political circumstances all influence our careers.

But in every context, personal agency still makes a difference.

And the human side of careers is wonderfully universal.
Perhaps that's why conversations about career ownership resonate with people at so many different stages of life and work.

Thank you to everyone who joined us and shared part of their evening.
