The photo diaries nobody asked for are almost at an end, if not THE end depending on who wins the cup. Today, I feel Spanish. Today I feel tapas. Today I feel Juan de Zurbarán. Today I feel Rosalía. Of course, I am not Spanish but I am in a hole with tin foil hat half on. I don’t think we can blame our loss on a corrupt FIFA but can we feel a little suss about how this tournament has played out? YEAH OK. If people were saying ‘England is sh*t’, I’d be like YEH FAIR and exempt myself from the generalisation because we aren’t talking about individual people, we’re critiquing governments and men like Javier Gerardo Milei, Gianni Infantino, Donald Trump. The world is full of inequality, misogyny and it’s been performed in front of us, game after game, the human condition, bigotry, love, hate, stupidity. ALL OF IT THIS IS FOOTBALL.

Anyway, good boys England on getting us this far. Any time you feel the pain jude refrain. Don’t carry the world upon your shoulders.

It’s been a joy. Photos from me and friends, it’s nice to see the pubs full.

# # # did you have a good one?

Photo Diary Pt 2

I don’t get to walk out of rooms I don’t like and I dont get to look away when the world shows its ugliness so I’m going to have a Braut summer. The racism, the corruption, the sports washing of greedy corporations like McDonalds attempting to rebrand Grimace when not so long ago he was feeding the IDF and the silencing of those who speak out has sat amongst the stories and imagery of ordinary people coming together. The World Cup at its best is an exchange of cultural ideas, crowds showing support for injustice the world over and it’s those pockets of morality that I have really needed as England spirals further into neoliberalism.
Some of these players are absolutely abhorrent and I don’t make excuses for them; it doesn’t mean we cant celebrate the examples of positive masculinity when we see it. So, here is my diary of friends and moments that I’ve celebrated during the tournament thus far.

Boycott the World Cup? Why don’t I just boycott my entire life. Not even allowed to write something wrong now in this perfect world. Sorry to all the perfect brothers and sisters out there.

You can read more musings if you like via the link in bio as I cover the tournament for the LRB 💋
