Play makes us be more honest without trying, pushes for better understanding of the game without having to think about it.
When that is combined with direct feedback and high levelled installation, we gain the skillset while having fun.
Learning to become dangerous is something to take seriously because violence should be taken seriously. However, when we focus too much on the heaviness and destructiveness rather learning it with playfulness, we lose touch with ourselves and the practice becomes more about our egos than anything else.
Play allows for mistakes, for failures, for trials and errors to happen. As long as there is someone who is directing where the corrections go in the right moment, the skillset gets installed without having to take the intensity too harshly.
Don’t get me wrong, if things go wrong in our daily lives and we are pushed to protect ourselves, we have to be capable to violence and brutal exchanges so we are able to go home. But when we train with lightness and playfulness, there are things that get unlocked because we are naturally more relaxed even when there is chaos and pressure surrounding us.

Context is ever changing but the movement is the same.
This principle lets me use different tools as an extension of my arm and be able to add on the attributes that the particular tool has. It’s like playing a rpg; picking up different armour or weapons gives different traits that can be used for different scenarios.
Filipino Martial Arts has that in spades. Being able to consistently train with a stick has taught me movements that otherwise won’t have been accessible with the other striking arts that i’ve practiced in the past. That said, when i change the tool into an ice pick or a short impact tool, the movement doesn’t necessarily change. What changes is the context of what i’m holding.
This way of connecting myself to whatever tool i have in my hand gives me more room to explore and to open myself up to movement that i may not have considered before.
The stick is a tool and an extension of the arm/body. Being able to move with it means it can teach us a variety of ways to fight and to add particular concepts to the arsenal that we have.
Private sessions available. If you want better reactions to stress and chaos, learn to fight with tools and protect your space, get in touch and book your sessions.

Refining their movement by allowing them to explore and find resonance in themselves.
Learning things through theory is great but it doesn’t always translate to application. When we are in a chaotic environment, our logic is hardly the one that switches on even when we want it to.
Gaining a better understanding of what we are capable of while in chaotic and uncertain moments needs training that includes that bit of our minds and bodies. Theories are easy. Anyone can do it. If you have a good imagination, you can make anything “work”. It’s when those theories are challenged and resisted that can become tricky for anyone to make their theories land and become effective.
If you wanna learn how to make those theories work, train with me and this version of Filipino martial arts. I can guarantee that we can w**d out what works for you and what doesn’t.

He’s 7.
These sessions teach me about play, more than any lesson i have taught him in almost a year.
There is a magic to how kids see the world and how they begin to interact with it. Being able to experience that while playing and training develops something much deeper than just a child learning martial arts.
Play is personal research. It eliminates the harshness of life and brings a lightness that i think we all need. As much as there is a need to understand chaos and violence and how to protect ourselves and move well, there is also a need to let loose and allow imagination take over. If we can picture a better world, i think we have a responsibility to turn that into action so it can begin to form into reality.
It’s a blessing to train someone who has innocence, playfulness, and imaginativeness as a default setting. I teach him a martial art that honors my culture and my teachers, while he teaches me that sometimes it’s okay to feel deeply but take life lightly when we can. I think that’s a pretty cool thing to learn from a seven year old.

Tools are extensions of our arms.
Whether your chosen tool is a sword or nunchucks or sticks or knives or, in this case, a sharp impact tool, it gives us the capability to train with particular attributes of the tool that in turn, gives our mind and body something to unlock and develop.
That means training with something like a sharp impact tool pushes me to explore movements that will make the tool effective as i move. Solo playing means i am able to sharpen existing movements and explore ones that i might not be so used to. For example, it allows me to combine my kickboxing or striking knowledge to the attributes of the tool. This expands possibilities and individual creativity.
This is a good way of getting used to holding a tool in our hands when we are learning to defend ourselves. Filipino Martial Arts is something that is trained for life as well as for sport. Consistent training with resistance and chaos is how the movements and concepts get installed in our nervous system.
Learn a new tool and add it to your current arsenal of protection.
- There are a few more sharpies left, if you’d like one to add to your EDC, give me a shout. -
