Meet Emma, one of the coaches and co-owners at Grange.
Jack of all trades and master of a very small handful, Emma brings a wide range of skills to running the club whilst maintaining interests away from the sport.
Emma has competed extensively from white through to brown belt, securing countless domestic and national titles alongside many IBJJF major podium finishes and a brown belt European title (M2).
She is currently working towards a return to competition at black belt following a pregnancy-induced break.

Emma leads the kids' programme at Grange, combining her school teaching experience with her Jiu Jitsu expertise. She teaches the majority of our kids' classes, oversees the curriculum, and leads on safeguarding.
Emma likes to balance the intensity of Jiu Jitsu with the calmness of Yoga. Grange members can benefit from her weekly Yoga sessions.
Although a qualified referee, Emma prefers to compete, coach students or take photographs at competitions. Sometimes she does two at once!

Our vision is to build a clear pathway for every child who trains at Grange.
Each age group has its own focus, with every stage building towards the next, ultimately preparing our kids to progress into our adult programme and continue their road towards black belt.
As co-owners and head coaches, we’re committed to leading this pathway ourselves and investing in the long-term development of the next generation at Grange.
For our 4–7 year olds, our focus is on helping the children learn how to learn while building confidence and resilience. We emphasise active listening, following instructions, and supporting teammates through feedback.
Our classes introduce core Brazilian Jiu Jitsu positions, basic point-scoring, simple takedowns, sweeps and guard passing in an age-appropriate way.
Classes comprise a gymnastics-style warm-up, stand-up and ground technique drills, and structured grappling games with clear objectives.
Specific / full sparring follows, allowing children to experience both winning and losing. We support children in handling setbacks positively, showing respect no matter what, and winning with humility.
For our 7–12 year olds, we build on the foundations developed in our younger classes, introducing more structured training while keeping sessions fun and engaging.
Children learn a wide range of techniques, progressing from takedowns and fundamental positions to more advanced guards, sweeps and controlled submissions. We place a strong emphasis on teamwork and being a good training partner with this age group, while encouraging independence during drilling.
We use specific grappling games to develop understanding, followed by both situational and supervised sparring, allowing students to apply what they’ve learned in a safe and controlled environment.
Our teen classes are designed for ages 12-16.
We help students build confidence, discipline and real self-defence skills. Teens can either start as total beginners or graduate from our 7-12s’ class.
Class structure parallels adult classes to ensure the best possible skill development in a safe environment. Classes comprise a movement-based warm-up, stand-up and ground technique, position

Meet Akhil Bist, head coach and co-owner at Grange.
(Keep scrolling for a very young Akhil!)
Akhil loves being at the gym with our members and is rarely seen without a smile.
He holds black belts in both judo and BJJ as well as multiple coaching qualifications. Grange students benefit from his exceptional stand-up knowledge.
He is unlikely to let anyone forget that he is the current Grange FPL title holder, and this is made doubly insufferable by the fact that he also supports Arsenal.
He may have a first in maths, but our kids' class members will attest to the fact that he cannot count.
Akhil started his training at the age of 8 at Ealing Judo Club where he achieved his black belt and became a national squad member. His judo competition career took him all over the world and saw him become national champion.
He added Brazilian Jiu Jitsu to his training at the age of 13, and later fell in love with No-Gi and wrestling.
Akhil loves reliving his youth when teaching our kids' classes!
After leaving the corporate world in 2022, Akhil committed fully to leading the charge at Grange, taking us from a part-time club in a rented school hall to the full-time schedule and premium dojo we now all enjoy.
Akhil loves to study both grappling techniques and coaching methodology, and is as versatile a training partner as they come.
Though injuries have hampered his competition career in recent years, Akhil's competitive instincts and drive are always there. His competition game is well-rounded and combines wrestling with leg locks, judo, dynamic passing and fancy guard play.
With the right rehab and the training room we have developed at Grange, Akhil is targeting a return to competition.

Congrats to Rachit on earning his purple belt last week! 🟣
Rachit has been one of the most technical grapplers on the mats for a long time and is well versatile in both stand up and on the ground. A well-deserved and overdue belt promotion. 👏

Faz - Black Belt ⚫️
Ben - Brown Belt 🟤
Alex H - Blue Belt 🔵
Congratulations to everyone promoted this week. Thoroughly deserved belts for three fantastic humans and excellent teammates.
A special mention to Faz on his black belt. Now the outrage that he is not a black belt can end!
