The Richard Moore Youth Race Series

Here are our final 'Buffalo Award' winners of the season.

We introduced the 'Buffalo Award' last year in keeping with our aim of encouraging attacking and lively racing in the series, and to celebrate riders' efforts rather than their results. This season has seen more contenders than ever for the award in each race, with so many riders putting in deserving efforts in all of the age categories.

Lionel Birnie, who together with Richard Moore and Daniel Friebe founded The Cycling Podcast in 2013, said when the series was launched, “We love the idea of introducing the ‘Buffalo Award’ for the most attacking rider. Richard’s affectionate nickname was the ‘Buffalo’ because his attitude to his work, life and cycling was to just get on with it, do your best, and learn in the hope of being better next time. That’s much like attacking in a bike race – the odds may well be against you but give it your best shot and if you get caught, have another go later in the race, or next time.”

These are the winners of the 'Buffalo Awards' from the final round on Tuesday night.

Again the reasons for winning were different for each rider, and included: driving the race but just missing out on the podium in the final sprint; a fearless performance coming back from a major injury; taking the race on and pushing from the front; trying (and succeeding) with a solo breakaway.

Prime Series points are awarded to the top 5 riders in each category, which will determine overall Prime Series winners at the end of the season.

Where 2 or more riders are tied on prime points at the end of the evening, their position for the Prime Series points is decided by their finishing position in the overall race results.

Here are the final series standings after Round 5 on Tuesday 18th August 2026 at West Lothian Cycle Circuit.

We have 6 winners from 6 different clubs - congratulations to them and all the riders who stood on the podiums last night!

Henry Sharp (West Lothian Clarion Cycling Club) took the Youth A Open title, picking up 3 wins along the way. Consistency from Thomas MacLeod (Falkirk Junior Bike Club SCIO) with 4 podiums gave him second place in the series, ahead of teammate Gregor McNaught (Falkirk Junior Bike Club SCIO) whose 2 wins from the 2 races he entered secured him the final podium spot.

Sarah McCormac (Edinburgh RC) also won 3 races to help her to the Youth A Female title. 2 wins for Emie Smith (Stirling Bike Club / Wallace Warriors) mean she finishes in 2nd, while 4 podiums for Erin Knox (Kingdom Velo) see her in third.

Henry Lockett (Falkirk Junior Bike Club SCIO) completed a clean sweep last night with his 5th win of the series - the only rider to achieve this this year - to confirm himself as the Youth B Open series winner. 4 second places from 4 races for teammate Alexander Mullen (Falkirk Junior Bike Club SCIO) sees him take the silver medal, while 5 third places for Alasdair Ogg (Johnstone Jets Youth Cycling) means he takes home the bronze.

Boo Williams (Clydesdale Colts) won the Youth B Female title for the second year in a row, courtesy of 4 wins in the first 4 rounds. Just 6 points separated Falkirk Junior Bike Club SCIO teammates Isla Reekie and Rose Martin in 2nd and 3rd respectively.

Euan McDonald (Stirling Bike Club / Wallace Warriors) won 3 times on his way to the Youth C Boys title. A win in the final round meant Benjamin Mullen (Falkirk Junior Bike Club SCIO) took second in the series, while Magnus Ogg (Johnstone Jets Youth Cycling) grabbed the final podium spot thanks to his 2nd in the bunch sprint finish last night.

Isla Sim (Johnstone Jets Youth Cycling) was victorious in the Youth C Girls category, with a perfect score thanks to 4 wins in the 4 rounds she started. An incredibly close battle for second saw Gemma Tattersall (Falkirk Junior Bike Club SCIO) pip Zoe Martin (Clydesdale Colts) by just one point, thanks mainly to Gemma's win in Round 4.

Props to everyone who raced in the 5th and final round of the series last night at West Lothian Cycle Circuit - and it was great to see a few new faces racing with us for the first time.

A cool, breezy evening - with 4 recently-crowned Scottish Champions on the start lines - saw another 3 terrific races as well as some stand-out rides to close out our season.

The race of the round was the A/B Female crit, with Youth B Olivia Laing (Southport CC) pipping Eilidh Coutts (Edinburgh RC) in the final sprint to take the win, both riders finishing ahead of the Youth A field.

Performance of the night came from Isla Sim (Johnstone Jets Youth Cycling) who rode away solo from the Youth C Girls and Boys to win by over 40 seconds - her 4th win in the 4 rounds she's started.

Henry Lockett (Falkirk Junior Bike Club SCIO) won the bunch sprint in the Youth B Open race, to complete a clean sweep of 5 wins from the 5 rounds - the only rider to do so this year.

Emie Smith (Stirling Bike Club / Wallace Warriors) picked up her second win of the series with a solo ride in the Youth A Female category.

Benjamin Mullen (Falkirk Junior Bike Club SCIO) won the 4-way sprint in the Youth C Boys to take his first win of the series after 3 previous podiums.

Henry Sharp (West Lothian Clarion Cycling Club) took his third win of the series in the Youth A Open category by virtue of winning the final sprint.
