Round 4 of the mid-east regional series headed to A1 raceway last month.

It almost turned into a weekend to forget! I’d gone back to the B74.2 after not gelling as I expected with the newer car and seemed to stitch myself up in several ways 😬

Firstly a ballstud didn’t have enough threads in the hub so that fell out during FP1.

Q2 I swapped to a 5.5 motor and wired the A and C backwards so the car was going no where

Q3 I’d missed to tighten a motor screw which backed out into the spur gear 🤦🏻‍♂️

That put the pressure on to do something with the remaining 2 rounds and with a 12 and a 16 I lined up B9

Mid-East regional A1 Grantham

I’d gone back to the old car for today as I was getting more and more disheartened with the new one.

FP1 and I ripped a ballstud out of the rear hub along with the threads. Clearly too short 🤦🏻‍♂️

FP2 and I lowered the front RC to calm it a little and based on fastest 2 conseq laps I went 8th overall.

Q1 and I was off to a good start and as number 7 I had a gaggle of cars ahead of me all behind on the clock. I think I was running 4th at the 2 min race order announcement and that’s when it all started to fall apart. Grip rolling. Coming up short on the jump. Getting hooked on the pipes. I ended up 12th overall.

Q2 and I decided the 6.5 didn’t quite have the grunt so fitted the 5.5 and headed out. Being the numpty I am I only went and soldered the ABC the wrong way around 🤦🏻‍♂️ DNS

Q3 with that resolved I was off. That was until lap 5 when a motor screw that was clearly not tightened up worked its way loose and into the spur gear locking the transmission up! And for good measure the pinion smashed off 4 teeth from the spur. DNF obvs.

Q4. I now needed a 6th in round to make the A and go faster than the guy currently in 10th. It wasn’t to be and I could only manage 16th which lined me up B9.

B final. I added some more glue further up the front tyres as advised to help with the grip roll issue and raised the front diff up to aid it further.

I got my way up to 2nd and began reeling in the leader only to stick it on its roof just when I got close enough to put the pressure on. Back to the attack again and just as I managed to get back up to him the time ran out. Oh well. 2nd and only 1.0 off the lead wasn’t too bad. I gained 6 pts in the championship too.

My worst qualifying position but my best finishing position.

Time for a bit of retro RC racing now I’ve painted the shell on the Team Associated TC3!

RHR round 2 - mideast regional 4wd

Having struggled with the car in round 1 a bit I’d got some new parts on it and I think I’ve solved the issue. The parts were a wide pivot set for the B84 which allows you to run the B74.2 arms and regain that wider pivot we all loved on the previous car. The info on the parts could do with a bit more info as if you fit only the blocks and arms you’ll find the car won’t fit in the box! This is because the b74 hubs were narrower than the b84 ones so the -4mm hubs and axles to suit are required. No box issues now!

FP1 was decent but the car felt too soft. Super easy to drive though. It also seemed to be lacking a bit of steering on corner exit.
FP2 I went from 1.6/1.5 roll bars to 1.7/1.8 bars. This seemed to cure the soft feeling as well as giving the car that steering it needed out of corners.
Q1, 2 and 3 I laid down the same times. 13 laps in 315 and was slowly slipping down the B final. Car was super easy to drive still and I was putting in clean 5 min runs each time.
Q4 I decided to try raising the diff height from 0 to 3. This changed the car nicely and moved it in the right direction. After 5 mins I had put down every lap bar 1 in the 23 sec range. The non 23 sec lap I was adding D/R for a bit more steering and went off line. That consistency and slight increase in pace resulted in going 13th in round and moving up 2 spots to start B7

In the final someone caused a massive pileup at the start… so I was up to 5th and then 4th soon after holding onto this position under Evie came to breath down my neck 😬 after 3 laps of holding position the car decided to land on its roof in the bomb hole dropping me 3 places and a wide line soon after another one and that’s where I finished. In 8th.

I’ve been using the WeiRC 1.5mm alloy chassis for a couple of weeks now over the 1.5mm steel kit option and so far so good. It certainly has more flex than the steel which was to be expected but also appears to keep its consistency over the night as grip levels can change.

A couple of weeks ago I had the chance to pop back to where my racing all began at Ludlow radio car club.

I decided to run with the mezzo tyres given I had a fair few worn to the point of not going to use them again outdoors and in the past the tyre choice was basically anything Schumacher yellow.

Practice and qualifying was very tedious. I was consistently power sliding most corners and lacking a lot of grip everywhere. Setup changes were coming from each time I hit the track but still couldn’t get the car where I wanted it to be and I qualified 10th so lined up B4.

At this point I’d convinced myself there must be something fundamentally a miss with my B84 so put the tyres onto the B74.2 and gave that a go but it was all the same. Mezzos for some reason don’t work. My dad gave me a set of very worn darts to try and then car was transformed. With time against me I had to run the B74.2 in the final.

A bit of a last minute dive on Malcolm to try and sn**ch the win didn’t pay off but it was still a fun race.

Last weekend saw the Buggy Blitz winter series conclude; hosted by West Bridgeford Model Car Club based in Nottingham. The series is over 6 rounds with multiple classes of off-road vehicles scattered for including trucks, short course, vintage 2wd and 4wd as well as the usual modern 2wd and 4wd.

A big thank you to Jason and the whole club for hosting this great event! I also won a prize in the raffle 😁

This final round saw my new Team Associated B7.1 hit the track for the first time. I had it built for the previous round but only the day before so went with the OG B7. I built it pretty much to the book going with a shock setup from Kam Wells using the Willspeed springs over the kit purple/purple and deciding to go with 60k 2gear in the diff.

Practice went half well. I say half well because the car turned in nicely but as soon as I hit the throttle all steering vanished! I managed to seed 14th nursing this issue. I then realised I had gone middle middle on my pills so was running too much rear toe at 2°.

Q1 and I’d changed the rear toe down to 0.5° and naturally the car was a lot better. It still had a tendency to push on throttle but things were moving in the right direction. 10th overall having a few minor issues passing other cars on track.

Q2 came and I moved the pills again to adjust the rear toe down to 0°. Again I went 10th overall. It would appear unless you’re the known fastest car in your heat you don’t get the same recognition for being faster than the cars you’re lapping…

Q3 and I moved the shocks more upright on the tower. The car was really starting to come alive now, dipping into the 24 lap club and taking another 7 seconds off my best time. This saw me go 5th overall!

Q4, the final chance to move up to the A final. I needed a repeat of Q3 now. I stood the rear shocks up to the final hole to aid on power steering and went for it. Unfortunately we had a carpet issue on one of the jumps meaning cars were coming off at an angle in the air. I tried a wide line hoping to find some flat carpet but I ended up going under the lifted carpet! Another 10!

Overall this lined me up B2. Not terrible but I knew I had the pace for the A. Here’s the video of how the final went!
