TABS CC - Thorp Arch & Boston Spa Cricket Club v Altofts Angels 5th July 2026
A must win game and the tightest of finishes were the ingredients of this latest encounter of the West Yorkshire Women and Girls Cricket softball cricket Division 1, as Altofts travelled to Boston Spa to take on the TABS girls who were confident after seeing off Altofts earlier in the season.
Altofts took a strong side and appeared all revved up for the game, and although the toss was lost it was TABS that decided to bat first.
Returning captain Sophie Scaife (sponsored by Yates Dry Wall Ltd) gave the side a much needed boost, and needed to have her wits about her, in a swirling wind and a short boundary on one side.
Altofts got off to the perfect start with Julie Bush (sponsored by Masterclass Education Yorkshire) making the TABS batter play a wide one, to be caught at deep gully by Scaife. Things got even better for Bush as the same batter was out 3rd ball, clipping one to Stacie Potter (sponsored by KDL renovation ) behind the wicket.
The two TABS batters improved for the rest of their partnership, as they added a respectable 20 to the total. The second pairing started slowly due to some good lines by Jackie Carter (sponsored by Ali Carter Temple Spa Consultant) and Joanne Walsh (sponsored by Maslen Tailormade Travel), with Walsh bagging a wicket trapping the TABS player LBW bang in front of the wicket.
Kelly Goodwin (sponsored by GSL Education) did a little jig of joy as she bowled her compatriot with her second ball, self-claiming it was her first wicket, (it wasnโt actually, it was the first time sheโd bowled someone ๐). Then got duly smacked for four next ball! The second pair restricted to 15.
On to the engine room, and Vicky Dunnill (sponsored by John Dunnill Landscapes) and Sonic Junior AKA Emily Goodwin (sponsored by DJ Prem) started really well. Young Goodwin getting a nice caught and bowled, before Kelly wrapped up the third partnership with her second wicket and another fine catch in the deep from Scaife.
With only 12 more added, it was down to the final TABS pairing and their two strongest batters to add some runs, which they duly did, adding 31 to the total, with only a tight run out their only blip.
TABS made 279, some great fielding especially by Emily, who saved a lot of runs on the leg-side boundary. Our only issue was three dropped catches, whilst all were high, the girls were disappointed they didnโt stick.
The total was certainly in reach, but the girls knew they had to switch on and play properly.
Stacie Potter came out and hit some lovely boundaries, backed up by Jo Walsh, with Stacieโs only negative being a stray shot that cost her 5 runs as she was caught in the 2nd over. A great start with 32 added.
The speed demons were up next, with Kelly Sonic Goodwin and her faster daughter walked into bat. However the highs of the previous week seemed to turn into nerves, as first Kelly was caught and then a crazy run out by Emily thinking she was Usain Bolt hit the Altofts innings. With only another 9 added it was 50/50 at halfway.
Jools and Jackie were up next, the latter hitting a wonderful cover drive boundary, only to see Jools lose her first wicket caught in the field. 2 more fours from Carter shifted the momentum back in Altofts favour, until the girls then imploded. First Carter was out caught, then next ball Bush was out in a similar fashion and then nerves started to kick in as another wicket fell. The match had seesawed back into the TABS laps. However, a good final over of 9, meant a positive result at least and it gave the last pairing a glimmer of hope.
Up stepped Vicky Dunnill and Captain Scaife, cometh the hour cometh the woman (think thatโs correct ๐). The pair knew that no wickets could be lost and that over 30 runs were needed to be scored. Scaife got the team off to a great start, with a boundary off the first ball and then 4 more runs added. 1st over down, 9 runs added, 24 needed.
2nd over and Scaife dominated the strike, hitting another boundary that went through the TABS players legs. A bit of good fortune which was loudly noted by the travelling clan.
9 off the over, 15 still required.
Some scrambled singles and a well run double kept the score ticking along but only 7 from it meaning 8 required to win.
Final over. Scaife hit the first ball for 4, again going straight through the TABS player on the boundary, cue wild scenes as some of the husbands just couldnโt watch! 4 required, then a dot ball, then a single and it was now up to Vicky not to go walkabout from her crease whilst the ball was still in play, and switch on. Well switch on she did, as she hit the first ball for 2. Match tied. Get a wicket now and itโs all in vain, stop the ball and a famous win.
Not only did she stop it, she hit it for a certain single and then both ladies for some unknown reason ran again! Any slip, trip or fall would have been catastrophic and believe me, these two have form for such events! Anyways this time, all was good. Both ladies home with nano-seconds to spare and the team returned to Altofts like a fly stuck in a windowโฆbuzzing.
The TABS ladies once again played their part in what was a very good advertisement for the womens game, fun, competitive and supportive. Great hosts, lovely ground, and even better result.
If the England v Mexico game is anything as exciting, weโll be in for a treat ๐คฃโฆ
The Mars Bar Player of the Match went to Captain Scaife for her heroics with the bat and two great catches, but all played their part.
