With no league business this week we managed to squeeze in a friendly before next week’s cup tie against a strong opposition from south of the river.

Sitting second in their league we always knew it was going to be a tough game against Armadale particularly when we had no recognised centre-halves in the team. Thankfully captain-for-the-day Clunie was happy to drop back to sit alongside Stuart M at the heart of our defence which meant Paul could slot into left-back for his first match in a long time following a series of niggling injuries. It was also a welcome return to the “most fouled man in Fife” Kev Hutt who returned after being out for three months with a knee injury. With both our normal keepers unavailable we also drafted in Jamie between the sticks.

The match was played at a neutral venue in south queensferry and Clunie got his captaincy off to a great start when he won the toss and elected to play with the blinding sun at our backs.

The match started well for the boys with Thommo latching onto a great through ball after some composed play in the middle of the pitch from Gaz and Kev. Sadly it wasn’t long before we were pegged back however and whilst there were claims of an offside Armadale drew level with a nice finish into the bottom corner.

Despite playing with the sun at our backs it sun still caused problems for both teams as it made it very difficult to see the ball in the air, especially when we went long and tried to play the ball into Gaz’s feet.

The last time we were south of the river, Gaz scored three of the purest strikes ever seen in a match against Bo’ness and it looked like history was repeating itself after he unleashed a shot from well outside the box which rattled the cross bar. Gaz was perhaps unlucky not to get a penalty after he was wiped out after getting his shot away but sadly for the boys the referee awarded a goal kick.

From our perspective we struggled to string many passes together for spells in the game and despite some intense pressing from the attackers and midfield, we couldn’t find our usual rhythm in the game. Armadale played some nice football and on a couple of occasions managed to get between the lines or behind our defence and if it wasn’t for a couple of great saves from stand-in goalie Jamie we could have a lost a couple of goals in quick succession. Unfortunately this resistance couldn’t last forever and eventually Armadale managed to score their second after they broke through again on the left hand side.

The start of the second half saw a couple of changes with the introduction of Jon, Pocket and Norrie. Pocket almost achieved messi-like status with the most sublime of touches from a massive hoof up the park but sadly he couldn’t find the back of the net with his resulting shot.

Armadale continued to look comfortable on the ball and it wasn’t long before they managed to get their third goal of the evening after another nice series of passes. The boys stuck at it and we managed to pull a goal back mid way through the second half after a delicious cross from Stuart was headed expertly into the far corner by Jon. Whilst there were claims of offside it was a delightful header into the far corner which left the keeper with no chance.

Having pulled a goal back we couldn’t seem to string enough passes together to unlock their defence and despite some good play down the right hand side from Thommo we weren’t able to find the equalising goal. Unfortunately however we conceded the fourth goal of the evening when a long throw was headed across the box to an unmarked attacker who had an easy finish at the back post.

A disappointing result in the end against a very well organised team, but the boys can be pleased with the fact that we stuck at it until the final whistle. It was also great to see Kev and Paul back in action as well as Pedro making his debut for the boys. The downside (apart from the result!) was the injury to Scotty F who had to go off in the second half with a groin injury…hopefully not too bad!

Unfortunately, our opponents were unable to field a team resulting in a 1-0 victory for us.

Despite not having a league game, we headed down to Stark’s Park where we played an in-house training match.

24 boys turned up - fantastic 👏🏻- to play blues 🔵 v reds 🔴

The reds came away with a 6-5 victory 🏆

Great football, great energy, great workout.
