Pattern Two of my small Spent Spinners series.
I tie these to my own dressing to try and emulate those I have seen on the water and also to tie the final stage of the Clyde Dry Fly patterns in general.
This one is a Medium Olive Spent Spinner, I will continue to post up other colour variations in the coming days as well.
The Veniards quill for this one has a nice and unusual dark nearly black Barr on one side of it, I think it gives the fly a real segmented look similar to the dyed stripped peacock quills also from Veniards, the Veniard quills are the best I’ve seen.
Hook - Veniard Osprey standard wet size 14, I find the dry hook a touch too long for this pattern.
Thread - Veniard Sheer in Black again unusual for an olive fly but I feel the black head gives a good contrast aiming point on these flies. (You can use Wisp as well but the thinner sheer was in my spool already)
Tail - Two red game fibres
Body - Veniard Turkey Biot in Olive
Thorax - Veniard SLF in Olive
Wing - Veniard Polypropylene Floating Yarn in Grey Dun (I split this into three equal sections so one 25mm piece ties three flies)
Getting the turkey biot to sit well can be tricky on these flies but I do prefer them to stripped quills as times, I recon they look a little bit fuller of life and that confidence is important.
Keep practicing them and you will get the tension right in time, it’s worth it.
Come find me at the upcoming Glasgow Angling Centre open weekend and I’ll show you how I do them

Well, it’s been a while since a fly came off my vice so I thought I’d get my head back into it with an old favourite - The Blae & Black ClydeStyle
Fingers are still working well enough and I’m happy with the first tie.
Hook - Kamasan B170 #14 from Veniards
Thread - Black Sheer from Veniards (truly excellent and I think I’ll switch for a lot of my flys from the Veniards Wisp except where the thread forms the body ribs, you need the 8/0 wisp for this style)
Wing - Wood Pigeon rather than Starling slips (Cushie Doo really suits the Clyde Style flies)
Hackle - Herbert Miner Whiting Farms Natural Black
Simple and elegant when you have tied lots of them, well worth persevering with these wings until you get them just so.
Come find me at the upcoming Glasgow Angling Centre open weekend and I’ll show you how I do them

What an honour to be invited to tie at the British Fly Fair International on tyers row again.
This is the pinnacle of fly tying and I’m delighted to be asked back, where I’ll represent Veniards and The Fly Emporium TFE.
Looking forward to seeing you all there, catching up with old and new friends and spreading the word about my style of tying.

Continuing on the emergers
One of my favourite flies tied as an emerger with a fast becoming a favourite colour shade of the Veniards Wisp Olive thread.
The Greenwell
Rather than the usual Greenwell or Furnace hackle I like to use a spot of firey brown dubbing as a collar on these flies.
If you see any sort of Olives hatching out get one or two of these on your cast!
Hook - Osprey size 14
Thread - Veniard Wisp Olive
Rib - Veniard French Wire no 27
Collar - Wapsi SLF rusty brown
Wing - 6 or 7 (depending on quality) natural CDC plumes

A wee while ago, Nige from Lakeland Fly Tying (go look them up for superb Whiting capes, saddles and other things) sent me up an unusual but very nice Olive Grizzle Hen cape.
It’s a muted golden olive colour and as usual stuffed with hackle feathers that can all be used.
I decided to use it on one of my quill bodied spider patterns.
I think the fly has come out very well using this cape, partnered with Veniards
Stripped peacock quill in golden olive colour and a touch of Veniards SLF dubbing.
I just know the Cumbrian trout will love these flies as much as the Scottish Loch and River fish do!
Cheers Nige!

Another fast fly to tie and one that’s better when it’s not picture perfect!
My version of the Iron Blue Dun Emerger
Lots of ways to tackle this prolific insect but I find this one fits the bill very well
Nice and dark, you can lighten it up a lot by using red thread and much less dubbing as well.
The key for me is to have it dark at the wing buds though and leave a thread tag at the base of the fly.
This fly covers lots of bases.
Hook - Kamasan B170 size 14
Thread - Uni purple
Body - Mole fur (vary the amount until you have a covering you are confident with)
Collar - Wapsi black boosted hare
Wing - 6 plums of CDC

A Clyde Style staple
The Blae & Black
As simple and effective as they get
Hook - Size 14 and 16 (5 of each)
Thread - Veniards Black wisp
Wing - Wood pigeon
Hackle - Natural Black hen
The trick to this fly is keeping them as slim and slender as possible, once down and back up with the thread, two winging loops and once round the back to raise the wings, two wraps on the hackle going forward and as I always do two wraps to lock the stem backwards again (this really strengthens the fly and give excellent longevity over a large number of fish caught).
Simple, give them a try!
