โ€œThe easy way out.โ€ ๐Ÿฉน

It is major abdominal surgery. You are awake for it. And then you are sent home to lift, feed and carry a newborn around the clock, on a body that has just been cut through several layers. ๐Ÿ’ช

The easy way out does not involve needing help to stand up. Or holding a pillow against your stomach to cough. Or working out how to get a baby off the floor when bending is not really an option yet.

Things people do not tell you ๐Ÿ‘‡

๐Ÿ—“๏ธ Six weeks is when you get checked. It is not when you are healed. The deeper layers take a lot longer.
๐Ÿค Numbness, tightness and an odd pulling feeling around the scar are common and they do settle.
๐Ÿ’ง Your pelvic floor still needs work. A caesarean does not skip that part nine months of pregnancy loaded it either way.
๐Ÿซ Start underneath, not on top. Breathing and the deep core come long before anything that looks like an ab exercise.

And would I do it again? In a heartbeat. It brought my two girls here. ๐Ÿ’•

That is the whole point. No birth is easy. Not one of them. Whatever route your baby arrived by, you did a hard thing and none of us needs ranking against each other for it. We are all warriors. ๐Ÿ’ช

Your body didn't just carry a baby. It rearranged itself to do it. ๐Ÿค

Pregnancy changes your posture and your joints and those changes don't reverse the day you give birth. Most parents are never told this.

What actually happens ๐Ÿ‘‡

โš–Your centre of gravity shifts forward, so your lower back takes more load and your ribs flare out
๐ŸฆดYour pelvis widens and tilts
๐ŸงฌThe hormones that softened your ligaments are still in your system for months, so joints move further than they used to that's the loose, clicky feeling

Then real life piles on top:
๐Ÿคฑ Feeding rounds your upper back and shoulders forwards
๐Ÿš— A car seat carried on one arm loads one side, every time
๐Ÿ›๏ธ Lifting a baby in and out of a cot dozens of times a day is a deadlift you never trained for
โœ‹ Wrist and thumb pain is common, and nobody warns you about that either

Add diastasis recti and a pelvic floor that's still recovering, and "just get back into it" is genuinely bad advice.

This is why our classes are self-paced circuits not bootcamp, not HIIT. Every exercise has an easier and a harder option. We rebuild the muscles that hold you up glutes, deep core, upper back before we ask anything to go faster.

It's not about bouncing back. ๐Ÿ’ช It's about being strong enough for the lifting, carrying and floor-getting-up-from that the next few years are made of.

Back Tuesday 1st September. ๐Ÿ“…

You do not have to be out of pocket to give your children a good summer. ๐ŸŒณ

I talked about this on the radio recently, because the pressure to spend over the six weeks is real and for a lot of families it is simply not there to spend.

Free things that still fill an afternoon. ๐Ÿ‘‡

๐ŸŒณThe park, but a different one to your usual a new playground is a whole day out to a four year old

๐Ÿ“šThe library. Free, dry and the summer reading challenge gives the big ones something to chase
๐Ÿ–๏ธThe beach. Bucket, spade, sandwiches from home
๐ŸŒฒA woodland walk with a stick collection and a den at the end of it
๐ŸงบA picnic on a blanket in the garden or the front room if it rains
๐Ÿ’ฆPuddle jumping in wellies. Costs nothing, remembered for years (might not need for this summer we are having haha)
๐Ÿ–A cardboard box and some pens. Genuinely.
๐ŸพA scavenger hunt on the walk you already do โ€”five things that are green, three things that are round

None of that is a consolation prize. It is just childhood.

Children remember who was there. Not how much you spent. ๐Ÿค

Drop your best free thing to do below if someone reading this needs an idea for tomorrow. ๐Ÿ‘‡

The summer holidays are lovely. โ˜€๏ธ They are also six weeks with no routine.

Older children are at home. Naps go out of the window. The class that was in your diary every week isn't there. And the first thing to go is the one thing you were doing for yourself.

If that is you right now, you have not gone backwards. ๐Ÿ’› You are in a different season for a few weeks, that's all.

Things to remember:

โœ… Itโ€™s okay to put yourself first each week in the 6 weeks holiday
โœ… Itโ€™s okay if you are counting down the days for your the summer holidays to finish
โœ… Have dates in the diary to see friend will keep you sane!
โœ… Find classes that still run in the holidays or have some evenings where your partner takes over so you can get out for a walk/ workout
โœ… You will lose your temper with your children, thatโ€™s okay you are definitely not the only person who has!

Be kind to yourself, know that you are doing your best and know itโ€™s okay to put yourself first from time to time as happy parent = happy child ๐Ÿ‘ถ

We're back from Tuesday 1st September. ๐Ÿ—“๏ธ Until then, be kind to yourself.

No parent should have to navigate parenthood alone. ๐Ÿ’™
