Cotton socks are the quickest way to end a hike early.

They soak up sweat and rain and stay wet, and that's exactly how blisters start. Merino wool does the opposite, wicks moisture away from your skin, keeps regulating temperature even when damp, and doesn't hold onto smell the way cotton does on a multi-day trip.

Not glamorous kit, but it's the difference between a comfortable ten miles and a miserable five. Worth getting right before anything else on the list. Link in bio.
