Gala Cricket Club

Yesterday saw us conclude the 2026 season with an end of season game v an Ex Players XI followed by our presentation event.

The game proved to be a competitive encounter, with this season's squad chasing down the Ex Players target with three wickets and three balls to spare.

Joint Starrett Players of the Match were current player Bailey Paterson for his unbeaten half century and Ex-Player/Legend Paul Cowan for his 2 for 11 bowling figures.

The end of season awards followed, with Iqbal Qasim picking up Players' Player and Player of the Year titles, Darius Maritz winning the All Rounder award, Robbie Paterson Young Player and Ben McColm the new Endeavour award for his efforts and performances with the 2nds.

We also made a presentation of 'Soor Plooms' to our Overseas Amateurs Darius Maritz and Benji Potgieter to acknowledge and thank them for their considerable efforts both on and off the field throughout the 2026 season.

Thank yous were made to all the players for their efforts during the season, all supporters and sponsors, Sean Taylor for his excellent coaching of the senior squad and the ground staff team of Davie, Ross, Billy and Thorsten who had Meigle Park looking fantastic all season.

We held our final outdoor junior session this week, when the softball and hardball groups joined together to take on a series of team challenges, which Murray's Maulers won.

We then had refreshments followed by George Henry of Rowan Boland Memorial Trust presenting most improved and spirit of cricket awards in both age groups.

Well done Harry, Eli, Luca, Cullen, Murray, Archie and Freya for picking up awards.

Thanks to all juniors and parents who have supported us over the summer as well as coaches who have given up their time to help, and Rowan Boland Memorial Trust for their continued support.

Gala suffered defeat in their final league fixture of the season at home to Dunnikier.

The Fife visitors made 295 for eight with Iqbal Qasim on top form as usual with the ball, taking one wicket for just 12 runs from his ten overs.

In reply, Darius Maritz scored a quickfire 46 before Gala collapsed, only for Starrett Player of the Match Eddie Scott (48 not out) and Bailey Paterson (35) to restore respectability as the home side finished on 198 all out.

The seconds put up a brave showing against Stewarts Melville in their final game. The Edinburgh team made 215 all out with Seb Loumeau taking four wickets, and Jordan Chisholm and Abdul Wahab top scoring in reply in Gala’s total of 155.

Ex-Players Day/Presentation evening

Our ex-players game takes place this Saturday from 1pm, with presentation of season awards and live music to follow from around 5pm. All ex and current players and members are welcome, with live music from Lewis Sanders. Please email [email protected] if keen to take part.

Juniors

The under 12s defeated St Boswells in their final incrediball game last Tuesday, while Freya and Olivia from our softball group represented the club at a Girls Festival at Kelso on Friday evening.

The final junior session will be on Tuesday 25 August with a presentation evening with juice, sweets crisps for all juniors and presentation of Most Improved and Spirit of Cricket awards at both softball and hardball age groups.

Caitlin's hen party success

We were delighted to host Caitlin Ormiston's hen party on Saturday - we hope all had a great day and wish Caitlin and Robbie all the best for their wedding day in 2027.

Foxes junior update

Well done to Olivia and Freya who took part in the Girls Festival at Kelso tonight. Thanks to Reece McNay for organising and Kelso for hosting.

Gala picked up the Border T20 Cup last Thursday with a 35 run win over Selkirk at Meigle Park.

Ben Potgieter top scored with 70 as Gala made 164 for 4 and Jamie Crooks took two wickets as Selkirk finished on 129 for 6 in an entertaining contest.

On Saturday, Gala claimed a sixth league win of the season against Heriots 2nds at Goldenacre.

The home side made 185 all out with Darius Maritz taking three wickets. In reply, Gala had a few nervy moments when reduced to 110 for 5, but 50s from Sean Taylor and Jamie Crooks and a valuable knock by Eddie Scott saw Gala home.

The 2nds were involved in a thrilling game against fellow Borders side St Boswells, losing out by just one run.

St Boswells made 192 for 7 with Daniel Hirtenstein scoring a half century for the Saints while Ben McColm and Adbul Wahab both took two wickets.

In reply, Starrett Player of the Match Craig Entwistle scored 61 as Gala finished on 191 for 7.

The final weekend of the league season sees Gala host Dunnikier with a 12noon start, and the Seconds are due to travel to Stewarts Melville 3rds at Inverleith with a 1pm start.

Ex-Players Day/Presentation evening
