You can summarise a 100 mile race succinctly and accurately, but it doesn’t tell the story. That’s because it’s in the plural, so many stories - not one. As the race director I have just one perspective, and even that is naturally biassed to my role despite how objective I aim to be.
Still, however limited and brief for now, this is my perspective on the race;
I witnessed over 65 volunteers work as a team together over a weekend. That exact team has never been formed before and will never exactly repeat again - I think that is pretty cool. I feel it mostly works because the team closest to me is very similar each time forming a strong centre and without that things could quickly collapse. This close team gets little recognition, they just do their job regardless - they do it for the love of it - I also think that is pretty cool.
I am deeply grateful to be a part of the team, and truly thankful for everyone's help and support - the success of the event is a reflection of all our efforts.
The runners played their part too, thank you for keeping to the instructions and behaving. A pleasure to meet so many fantastic new people. Equally, it was just staggering to notice how many runners I actually knew! I gain a lot of reassurance from your continued support over the growing years.
Finally, everyone is allowed a highlight right. Well, mine is Fay. Flew over from Canada for the race. Turned 70 years old on race day. And finished within the cutoff. My word.
I say it every time and I won’t apologise for it. The real winner is always the fact the event can happen at all, the real celebration is ultra running itself. I’m blessed to have found a place to belong and to do something that feels right to me - to live out a passion.
Although I had every intention to organise the race again in 2028, before booking the date I needed to know I had the health to still do the job on this edition, as it takes so much out of me since the stroke. I’m delighted to say I’ve got a few more in me yet I reckon. See you in 2028.
Forever On The Roam...
