FULL TIME | Pumpherston 1–4 Cowdenbeath Central

Match Report 📝

Cowdenbeath Central came away from Recreation Park with all three points after an impressive 4–1 victory over Pumpherston, with Connor Spence grabbing a hat-trick.

Central opened the scoring through Calum Stewart, whose hard work and pressing forced the Pumpherston defender into a mistake. The attempted clearance cannoned off Stewart and fell kindly into his path, allowing him to keep his composure and calmly slot the ball beyond the goalkeeper.

Pumpherston responded two minutes before half-time when a cross-cum-shot found its way in at the back post to bring the hosts level.

Central's response was immediate.

Straight from the restart, some excellent play released Stewart down the right-hand side. His cross picked out Connor Spence at the back post, whose header beat the goalkeeper at the bottom corner, going in off the post to restore Central's lead before the break.

HT | Pumpherston 1–2 Cowdenbeath Central

Central took control of the game after the interval and produced their best football of the afternoon.

The third goal came from arguably the move of the match. Some excellent football through midfield eventually found Kris Kelly, who slipped Glen Young in on the overlap. Young delivered a superb cross into the area and Spence arrived at the back post with a bullet header that flew into the top corner.

Central continued to push and added a fourth after more excellent work from Stewart. He got the better of the Pumpherston full-back before being brought down inside the box, leaving the referee with little choice but to point to the spot.

Spence stepped up and made no mistake, converting the penalty to complete his hat-trick and round off an excellent afternoon for Central.

🗣️Manager's Comments

"This is the first time we've managed to take the points from a difficult opposition in Pumpherston, so we're delighted to get the win.

"It was a good performance overall from the lads, especially in the second half. I thought the young lads had superb games throughout. Calum caused their defence all sorts of problems all game, Glen was superb defensively against a tricky winger and never gave him a kick of the ball.

"Mikey was excellent when he came on as well. He showed real quality and composure on the ball and helped us dominate the midfield in the second half.

"Hopefully we can continue to build on this performance and take it into next week.

"A final mention has to go to Connor Spence, who took his goals really well today. He thoroughly deserved Man of the Match. His work rate is excellent, the boy never stops, and today he got his rewards with three goals."

FULL TIME | Cowdenbeath Central 0–1 Luncarty

A frustrating afternoon for Central as a late Luncarty goal proved the difference in a closely contested game.

Cowdenbeath enjoyed the better of the game for large spells, seeing plenty of the ball and pushing the visitors back, although neither side created too many clear-cut opportunities.

Central were also forced into changes at the back at half-time due to injuries, before the game changed again midway through the second half when Cowdenbeath were reduced to ten men with around 25 minutes remaining.

Luncarty were then handed a great opportunity to take the lead from the penalty spot, but the effort came back off the bar.

Despite being a man down, Central continued to push forward and went looking for the winner rather than settling for a point. The young players introduced from the U20s made a positive impact and helped keep the pressure on the visitors.

Unfortunately, with around five minutes remaining, a mix-up in the Central defence saw the ball fall kindly to a Luncarty player inside the box, who finished from close range to give the visitors the lead.

Central continued to push in the closing stages but couldn't find a way back into the game, with Luncarty holding on to take all three points.

Manager's Comments

"We're disappointed not to take something from the game because I felt we dominated for large spells, although neither team really created anything clear-cut.

The sending off obviously changed the dynamics of the game for us, and we'd already been forced into making changes defensively at half-time because of injuries.

I thought the young boys from the U20s made a really positive impact when they came on, which was great to see. Even with ten men, we kept pushing and tried to win the game.

On another day we'll probably play worse than that and win, so we can't be overly disappointed with the performance. It's a frustrating result, but there are plenty of positives to take from it.

We now turn our attention to Pumpherston away from home on Saturday."
