🏐 Brookshaw Tournament Recap: Chelmsford Capri - Fast 5s

🕒 Final Position: 9th out of 10

A completely new challenge, a hot day and one last hurrah for this squad before stepping up to the 10/11 league in September. Honesty first: it wasn't a winning day on the scoreboard. But this report isn't really about the results…it's about a team that turned up, adapted to something totally unfamiliar and gave it everything they had.

⚡ A New Format, A New Challenge

Fast 5s stripped the game right down – no WA, no WD, just five players covering C, GA, GD, GK, and GS across nine fast-paced short games. For a squad that had never played this format before, it was always going to be a steep learning curve.

The positional changes hit some players harder than others. Amelia and Elsa, who usually anchor themselves in defence and attack for the majority of a normal match, suddenly found themselves needed in the Centre third…completely outside their comfort zone. Grace and Elle rotated through part-matches, giving everyone court time while allowing "fresh legs" to rest in the heat.

The best moment of realisation came six games in, when Elle finally cracked the code: "Oh I get it, it's like having 2 GDs and 2 GAs!" 🤣 Sometimes it takes a few games to see the pattern and credit to the girls for figuring it out mid-tournament.

🔥 Battling the Heat

Nine games in hot conditions with minimal recovery time between matches is brutal on anyone. The team leaned on ice poles, icy towels, and constant hydration to get through…there were moments where girls simply sat with cold towels on their heads between games just to cool down. That's dedication.

It took a few games for the format to click and the competition had clearly practiced this style extensively. But that 5-0 win over Brookshaw Sprite stands out…some lovely revenge given our league defeat to them earlier this season! And the 3-3 draw with Brookshaw Kia-Ora showed real defensive resolve.

🌟 Player of the Match Round-Up

With five different names across nine games, it's clear this was a real squad effort:

*Evie* picked up three Player of the Match awards, smashing it in both attacking and defending roles throughout the day…proving just how adaptable she is when the format demands it.

*Abigail* earned two mentions and was, without question, the most versatile player of the tournament. Playing GD, C, GA, and GK across different games, she showed incredible teamwork and attitude no matter where she was asked to play.

*Bella, Elle, and Amelia* each claimed one award. Bella found the net when she swapped into GA, Elle led the charge in that brilliant win over Brookshaw Sprite, and Amelia…ever the entertainer…kept attempting those long-range shots from outside the circle. She's nailed them in practice plenty of times and while match-day timing wasn't quite there, she kept trying right up until the whistle. A few of those went in just before the match started…we all saw it and if it had counted, that's worth 2 points in this format! Keep backing yourself, Amelia.

🎯 A Squad Effort Worth Celebrating

Nobody expected a winning scoreline looking at this line-up going in and that's okay. This was about experience, exposure to something new, and preparation for what's ahead. Abigail's willingness to play four different positions across the day summed up the whole squad's attitude: whatever's needed, we'll do it.

💜 The End of an Era

This was the last time this squad plays together as they are. Come September, these girls step up into the 10/11 league…a new chapter, a new challenge and hopefully some of today's lessons carried forward.

It hasn't been about winning today. It's been about taking part, trying something completely different, learning what Fast 5s demands and doing it all together as a team one final time before this group moves on to the next stage of their netball journey.

🎉 9th out of 10 doesn't tell the story of today. This team turned up in the heat, tackled a format they'd never played, adapted position after position and did it all with heads held high. Next year, we'll be more prepared…but today was about the taking part and these girls did their club proud.

What a fantastic tournament for the girls! They finished with 2 wins, 2 draws and 4 losses, with two of those defeats decided by just a goal or two against some really strong teams. I’m so proud of them for finishing in a brilliant 7th place. 💜

Everyone played so well, and once we found our rhythm with the Fast 5 format, the team executed some lovely movement all over the court. Their spacing and teamwork has really come together.

Our defence was outstanding, with some brilliant interceptions and tight marking from Beth, Lorelai, Hannah and Emma. Isabelle, Sienna and Lorelai all took on the C role, worked tirelessly and gave everything for the team. A huge well done to Hollie, Hannah, Isabelle, Sienna and Beth, who all stepped up to shoot, found some great space and scored some fantastic goals.

🎉 A special mention to Lorelai, who picked up an incredible 6 Player of the Match awards, and to Hollie for scoring a brilliant 2-point Super Shot!

💜 A huge thank you to Emily for taking some fabulous photos, David for his brilliant scoring, Vicky for keeping us on time and making sure we were always at the right court at the right time, and all the parents for your amazing support throughout the day. We couldn’t have done it without you!

These girls have come such a long way this season, and I’m incredibly proud of every single one of them. I can’t wait to see what next season brings for this lovely team. 💜
