🏃‍♂️ CASTLEFORD 10K — VOLUNTEERS NEEDED 🙌

A quick shout-out to any of my running friends and anyone involved with local running clubs who might be able to help.

I’m currently linking in with Castleford Tigers around the upcoming Castleford 10K, and we’re looking for a few more people who may be able to support the event.

If you’re not running but would be willing to volunteer, the likely window will be roughly 7:30am–12:00pm, depending on the role you’re allocated.

I’m working through the details with the Tigers at the moment, so for now I’m just trying to get an idea of who may be available.

If you can help, please drop comment below and let me know 👍

Once I’ve got the final roles and timings, we can look at allocating people accordingly.

It would be great to get plenty of support from across the local running community and help make the Castleford 10K a cracking morning. 🖤💛

Really productive day 👌

Great catch-up with Nat Reyt Sauna and Jo Behavioural Science | Perimenopause | Wellbeing entrepreneur — as usual, covering a bit of everything and anything 😂 but some really positive conversations around funding and grant applications, where the CIC could potentially go next, and opportunities to work collaboratively going forward.

Also fab to finally meet Imogen Sutcliffe in person, who I’ve been chatting with on Instagram and supporting her with her running for the last few months — and ironically we end up bumping into each other in fract. 😂

Finished off with another really positive chat with Castleford Tigers RLFC about supporting the 10k too.

Plenty going on, plenty to think about, but definitely feels like things are starting to move in the right direction. 🙌

🏃‍♂️ TUESDAY INTERVALS – 6:30PM

I’m going to be doing an interval session on Tuesday evening at 6:30pm, meeting at the Xscape overflow car park.

This wasn’t something I’d originally planned to introduce through SAVR Run just yet, but where I’ve previously been doing some of my own training isn’t currently an option, so I thought rather than just heading out and doing it on my own, why not open it up to others too?

I’ll be doing the session anyway as part of my Amsterdam Marathon training, but I’d love to have a few people there to train alongside, support and hopefully start building a bit more of a local running community around these sessions.

The session will be time and effort based, so it can work for different abilities. You don’t need to be fast and you don’t need loads of experience — just come along, work at your own level and get a good session done.

I’m an England Athletics qualified coach, and the founder, current Chair and coach at Savvy Park Runrz, so I’ll be there to help guide the session and support anyone who comes along.

Over the coming weeks I’ll also be sharing more about some of the programmes and sessions I’m looking to introduce through SAVR Run — from people who are thinking about starting running, through to those looking to build confidence, improve, run further or get faster.

ONE WEEK TO THE GREAT NORTH RUN 🏃‍♂️

So, what should your final week of training actually look like?

First thing: start reducing the volume.

You’re not trying to gain loads of fitness now. The work has largely been done, so this week is more about keeping the legs moving, keeping a bit of rhythm and making sure you arrive fresh.

If you’ve still got a final longer run planned, keep it sensible. And if you’ve missed runs over the last few weeks, don’t start cramming them in now just for the sake of it.

If you’ve been doing speed, interval or tempo work as part of your training, you can still keep some of that in — but reduce the volume. A few shorter efforts can help keep some intensity there without leaving you tired.

For me personally, I’ve always liked a shakeout run towards the back end of race week.

If I’ve travelled to a race, I’ve sometimes gone out for a short run when I first arrive just to get the legs moving again, and then another short one the day before.

Sometimes that’s been 3K, sometimes 5–6K. It really depends on how I’m feeling.

Nothing hard. Nothing to prove.

Sometimes I’ll finish with a couple of short quicker bursts or strides, just to get the legs turning over, then it’s about getting off my feet and recovering.

The big things this week:

🏃 Reduce the overall volume
⚡ Keep a little intensity if you’re used to it
❌ Don’t cram in missed sessions
😴 Prioritise recovery
💧 Stay well hydrated
🍝 Start making sure you’re getting your carbs in
👟 Keep everything familiar

And with food, don’t suddenly reinvent your diet. I’ll put another post out later in the week around race-week food and fuelling, but the main message is nothing massively out of the ordinary.

The aim this week is simple:

Keep the legs moving. Keep the confidence. Arrive fresh.

ONE WEEK TO THE GREAT NORTH RUN — GET SORTED THIS WEEKEND ✅

If you’re running next Sunday, don’t leave everything until Friday or Saturday night.

Use this weekend to get the boring stuff sorted. If you’re working all week, today and tomorrow are your chance to check what you’ve got and pick up anything you’re missing.

🎽 Make sure you know where your race number is
📍 Check your wave and start information
👕 Decide exactly what you’re racing in
👟 Make sure your shoes are ready — nothing new
⚡ Check you’ve got enough of the gels you’ve trained with
💧 Sort your hydration/electrolytes
🍌 Decide on your race-morning breakfast
🚗 Check your journey to the start
🚇 Plan how you’re getting back from South Shields
🧴 Anti-chafe / sun cream if you use them
🎒 Sort anything you’ll need before or after the race
🎧 Make sure your headphones are charged and playlist sorted

It’s better done now rather than running around like a blue arsed fly last minute and stressing

You don’t need to pack your bag tonight 😂 — just make sure you’ve actually got everything.

The less you leave until the last minute, the less there is to stress over.

Tomorrow I’ll cover what that final week of running should look like — and what you definitely DON’T need to be doing seven days out.

Gym done ✅ getting back in to routine…

Last day before Harry’s back to school… so obviously I made him get up early and come to the gym with me 😂

Got to get used to those early mornings again!

It’s the same with training though — routine builds habit, and habit builds consistency.

You won’t always feel motivated to get up, go for the run or get the session done. But the more it becomes part of your routine, the less you have to think about it.

Build the habit. Keep showing up.

And yes Harry… the alarm will still be going off tomorrow 😂

RUNNING ON HOLIDAY? KEEP IT SIMPLE. ☀️🏃‍♂️

You’re on holiday after all.

If it’s hot and humid, your normal pace can suddenly feel a lot harder.

Your heart rate may sit higher.

Your breathing may feel tougher.

And if you are like me you will end up looking like you have ran through the sprinklers.

That’s where Zone 2 can really help.

Forget the pace.

Run by effort.

Keep it conversational.

Slow down if you need to.

Walk briefly if your heart rate keeps climbing.

Shorten the run if the conditions are taking more out of you than expected.

That’s not a bad session.

That’s adjusting to the environment you’re actually running in.

And remember — a holiday can also be a recovery week.

You don’t need to squeeze in every session.

You don’t need to chase mileage.

You don’t need to prove anything.

A few easy runs, some time on your feet, plenty of hydration and proper rest can be more than enough.

Sometimes the best thing you can do for your training is come home feeling fresher than when you left.

Keep moving. Keep it easy. Enjoy the holiday.

Now some pool time and a bit of beach later 🏖️
