Our current position in the World Rankings says it all—and the only way is up. For the next Rugby World Cup, our goal should be simple: get out of the group stages. Anything beyond that is a bonus. But to get there, we need to go back to our roots.
We’ve said it before: the problem with Welsh Rugby is Village Rugby, but the best thing about Welsh Rugby is Community Rugby. We can’t sustain 10 clubs within 10 square miles. Gone are the days when every school had a team for each year group, and every club fielded sides from U8s to Youth.

1. A separate pathway for front five development, possibly at a national level
2. Boys-to-Men support, so those who don’t make it are still valued and reintegrated into semi-pro and community clubs
3. A new top to bottom version for Women’s Rugby, with separate pathways for players, coaches, and referees, grown from within the womens game itself, This might sound controversial, but it’s time to be honest. We need a long-term vision, the womens game is different but the same and people are confused by the way forward.

We need 300–400 players fighting for selection by age 16—that’s around 75–100 per region. That means building a system that works.

We need a project:
“Pathway to Winning the World Cup”
Let’s aim for 2051. Let’s build something that lasts.

After Saturdays result we feel it is time for action. We need to go back to our roots, club rugby, not that we're bias. We have to draw a line in the sand, our position in the World Rankings about sums up where we are and the only way is up. Our goal for the next RWC should be to get out of the group stages, anything better is a bonus.

We have often said on this channel, that the problem with Welsh Rugby is Village Rugby but the best thing about Welsh Rugby is Community Rugby. We cannot sustain 10 clubs in 10 square miles, gone are the days where virtually all schools had at least 1 side for each year from year 3 to 13, each club had teams from under 8's to Youth.

We NEED 300-400 players fighting for selection by the age 0f 16, so currently that's 75-100 players per region. Possibly a separate pathway for front 5 development, which may need to be done at a National level. Boys to Men support, so that those that don't make it are supported and integrated back into the semi professional and Community sides. We also believe that a scaled down version of this could used to develop Womens rugby. This might sound controversial but we feel there should be separation between the Mens and Womens pathways, that goes for Coaches and Referees, where they should be grown from within.

September should be an explosion of community rugby, clean new lines on the pitch, possibly a lick of paint on the posts. Hopefully there are few games affected by the weather this weekend, so clubs can gather momentum and get the support for the community game. Has the recent rain affected your pitches?

The biggest problem in Welsh rugby is Village rugby, the biggest asset in Welsh rugby is Village rugby. Everything is spread thinly and there are limited resources, what do people think is the solution, or is the WRU on the right track with this season’s restructuring?
