Let's talk about your ribs.

Rib and chest injuries are a recognised feature of equestrian trauma — and forces don't always come from directly in front or behind.

That's one of the reasons the sides of a FOMO look different.

Our articulated side construction uses overlapping protective sections inspired by the armour of an armadillo.

The layers are designed to provide substantial protective coverage around the lateral torso and rib area while still allowing the protector to articulate as the rider moves.

Because protecting your torso shouldn't mean turning it into one rigid shell.

Can wearing a body protector actually make a difference?

Research analysing 718 US Pony Club cross-country incident reports found that riders wearing body protection were associated with a:

56% LOWER RELATIVE RISK OF INJURY.

That's a statistic worth talking about.

No piece of safety equipment can eliminate the risks associated with riding, and a body protector cannot prevent every injury.

What it can do is provide a protective layer designed to absorb and distribute impact forces before they reach your body.

In a study with the University of Edinburgh comparing protective technologies, we found up to a 46% reduction in rib stress during an impact with FOMO foam body protectors versus no protection at all.

For us, protection isn't about riding scared.

It's about giving yourself the best protection available while doing the sport you love.

Your body protector is NOT a back protector.

It's one of the biggest misconceptions we hear in equestrian safety.

In one study of major equestrian trauma, 54% of patients sustained chest injuries, compared with 17% sustaining spinal fractures.

That's why a body protector isn't designed to just cover your spine.

It's designed to provide protection around your chest, ribs, back and sides — helping to absorb and distribute forces before they reach your body.

And it's why, when we designed FOMO, we thought about protection around the rider, not simply down their back.

Over the next few weeks, we're taking you behind the design of FOMO — from impact protection and fit to our side-zip construction, armadillo-inspired layering and additional crush testing.

Because understanding why your safety equipment is designed the way it is matters.

Protection designed differently. Tested differently. 🖤

At FOMO, meeting the industry standard has never been where we want the conversation around rider protection to end.

Our body protectors have been tested over and above industry requirements, including innovative fall-simulation testing and research with the University of Edinburgh to better understand how a body protector performs during a fall.

The research allowed us to analyse protection across both the skeletal system and internal organs in simulated fall scenarios — taking our testing beyond traditional impact requirements and looking more closely at what happens to the rider during a fall.

That research-led approach sits behind everything we do.

From our FLIP children's body protector, designed specifically around smaller riders, to FAZE for teens and adults, we're continually looking at how innovation, fit and design can advance rider protection without compromising freedom of movement in the saddle.

Because for us, protection isn't just about passing a test.

It's about continuing to ask how we can make it better.
