After a very positive pre-season and some outstanding performances from the team, it’s finally time to get down to business! 🖤🧡

Broadlands AFC Women take on Treorchy Ladies in Round 1 of the South Wales Women & Girls League seedings.

The squad have worked incredibly hard throughout pre-season, putting together some brilliant performances and showing just how much this group has developed. Now comes the first competitive test of the new season. 💪⚽️

Match Report 🟠⚫️

Today we travelled to Swansea to face the current West Wales League Division Two champions, Rockspur Ladies — and what a good side they are.

Both teams played some lovely football at times and there were plenty of positives to take from the game. Of course, there are still things for both sides to work on, and that’s exactly what pre-season is all about.

These games aren’t about the scoreline. They’re about learning, developing, testing ourselves and identifying the areas we need to improve ahead of the new season.

We’d also like to acknowledge our goalscorers today, with a fantastic effort from all of the players:

Grassroots football is built on volunteers.

People who give up their evenings, weekends, family time and often their own money to create opportunities for others to play the game they love.

Yet sometimes, grassroots clubs can be made to feel like they are the problem rather than the very people keeping football alive.

Clubs are expected to grow the game, recruit players, develop women’s and girls’ football, provide inclusive opportunities, find coaches, train volunteers, secure pitches, raise funds, buy equipment, meet regulations and somehow keep everything affordable.

And when clubs raise genuine concerns about decisions that affect their teams and players, they should be listened to, not dismissed.

Grassroots clubs are not businesses with huge budgets and paid departments behind them. They are committees answering emails after work. Coaches standing on freezing pitches after a full day in their jobs. Parents and coaches washing kits. Volunteers marking pitches, chasing grants and trying to find somewhere for another team to train.

They do it because they care.

That goodwill should never be taken for granted.

You cannot talk about growing grassroots football while making the people actually delivering it feel unheard, unsupported or disposable.

Consultation needs to mean more than simply telling clubs what has already been decided. Concerns should be taken seriously. Communication should be respectful. Decisions should recognise the realities clubs face on the ground.

Because when a grassroots club struggles, it isn't just a badge or a committee that suffers.

It is players who lose somewhere to play.

It is coaches who eventually burn out.

It is women and girls who may walk away from football.

It is communities that lose something incredibly valuable.

Grassroots clubs don't expect everything to go their way. They understand difficult decisions have to be made.

But they absolutely deserve a voice, transparency and respect.

Without grassroots clubs, there is no grassroots game and this is how grassroots can often be treated, see below! ⚽

We’re pleased to welcome Emma Jenner to Broadlands AFC! 🧡🖤

Emma is new to football at this level, having only played during her childhood, but she’s already getting stuck into training and showing plenty of potential.

This season will be about development for Emma, alongside a couple of our other developing players, giving them the opportunity to build their confidence, learn the game and continue improving throughout the season.

She’s already showing a great attitude in training, and we’re looking forward to seeing how much she can progress.

We’re delighted to welcome Chloe Collett to Broadlands AFC! 🧡🖤

Chloe grew up playing football before taking a break from the game when basketball became more serious. She went on to play basketball in Spain for three years, captaining for Wales and representing Great Britain. 🇪🇸🏀

Now she’s made the move back to football, and she’s already making an impact. With her athleticism, experience and huge potential, Chloe is a very exciting addition to the squad.

We can’t wait to see her continue to develop and see what she can achieve this season.

We’re pleased to welcome Cerys Hutin to Broadlands AFC! 🖤🧡

Cerys comes to the team with a slightly different sporting background. An ex-martial artist, she had never played football before getting involved in games with colleagues.

From those first kickabouts to now joining a football team, Cerys is ready to take on a new challenge and continue developing her game with us.

🔥 NEW SIGNING | LU DELGADO🔥

Another exciting addition ahead of the 2026/27 season as we welcome Lu Delgado to the squad! ⚽️

Lu brings plenty of football experience, having played throughout her childhood before going on to sign for Cardiff City. A versatile player who can play up front or in defence, she brings strength and experience at both ends of the pitch.

Lu stepped away from football at just 16, but 15 years later, at 31, she made her comeback to the game proving it’s never too late to pull the boots back on. 💪

Now she’s ready for the next chapter and heading into 2026/27 with fire and determination.🔥⚽️

From Cardiff City, to time away from the game, to finding that love for football all over again…

New Signing — Zoe Taplin!

We’re delighted to welcome Zoe Taplin to the team! 🔥

Zoe’s football journey started at just 8 years old, playing for Cowbridge Boys until the age of 11. She was even selected to play for the Under-12s, but at her first tournament, she was unfortunately walked off the pitch by an official because she was a girl and wasn’t allowed to play in the boys’ team! 🙈

She went on to play a year for the girls’ team before switching to hockey, but thankfully, times have changed! 🙌⚽ Let’s hope that official would be proud to see just how far the women’s and girls’ game has come since then!

A strong, composed defender who has really impressed throughout pre-season. 💪

We’re excited to see Zoe’s progress over the coming season and can’t wait to see what she brings to the team.
