The boys were back at it again with another home game, this time against Washington Tigons. It’s always a great game against a very big, physical and tough team, and today was no different!
The Viking boys were on top from the off in the first half, making the Washy lads work hard to close the ball down.
A couple of changes were forced through injury, but the lads coming on made a real difference. Leo was playing some lovely 1-2 football down the right, with Jake getting onto the end of one chance but just snatching at it and putting it wide.
Their keeper then launched one of his trademark long balls — somehow managing to kick it the length of the pitch against the wind! This saw us pinned back for a moment, but Charlie played a great pass through to Theodore, who found himself 1v1 with the keeper. Great pace into the box, but their keeper pulled off a great save.
From the goal kick, Ship won the ball and played Leo — who was unreal all game — and he put Theodore through 1v1 again. Theodore squared it across the box and Jake finished it off to make it 1-0.
Straight from the kick-off, Galvin pinched the ball, drove forward and got hacked down. He took the free kick himself, but a miskick fell perfectly to Theodore, who somehow hit the post from about two yards out!
Half-time: 1-0
Washy changed their tactics at half-time, bringing on four lads who must have been about 6’3”! It was long balls, long throws and corners from then on.
The equaliser came from an absolute rocket from their keeper — about 70 yards out from his own box — which sailed over our keeper and into the net.
But the Viking boys responded brilliantly. From the kick-off, Kai played it to Frankie, who put a great ball through to David. He raced through and calmly finished to make it 2-1.
Then came a slightly mental decision from the ref, giving them a corner which was launched into the box like a missile. A great header from their big lad making it 2-2.
The last 10 minutes were just a battle. Foul after foul, with David going close and Ollie Foy getting taken down in the box — which looked like it should have been a penalty.
Then, in the final few minutes, a long ball found their winger. He crossed it into the box, there was a spill, and they tapped it in from about three yards out with nobody near him. Goal given.
3-2 to Washington. Madness!
The last few minutes saw the Washy lads taking the ball into the corner and huddling around it to see the game out — quite funny to watch, but fair play to them for seeing it through.
A great game from both teams and plenty of effort from the Viking boys. ⚽️💪
We go again next week! 💚⚽️
