The 2026/27 Belfast Interpool League season officially gets underway tonight with the Hugh O’Neill Cup preliminary round, before the league fixtures begin on Thursday night.

This season marks our exciting transition to International Rules, alongside a brand-new league format featuring **23 teams**.

With record player numbers already registered at this early stage, this major step forward will help take the Belfast Interpool League from strength to strength.

Ahead of the return of the Belfast Interpool League next week, this is the final reminder that ALL referees must attend a referee night to be able to referee this year in the league

Teams who cannot provide a referee who has attended one of these nights will forfeit any frames they cannot referee

The Belfast Interpool League’s Premiership Player of the Year race delivered a finale worthy of the remarkable season that preceded it, as Martin Heaney edged out John Reid in a dramatic play-off decider after the two stars could not be separated across 28 league matches.

Both men completed the campaign with an outstanding return of 24 wins from 28 frames, underlining not only their consistency but their importance to their respective teams throughout one of the most competitive Premiership seasons in recent memory. With neither player willing to give an inch across the regular season, a Best of 7 play-off was arranged to finally determine who would take the prestigious individual honour.

Played in front of an excellent crowd, the match quickly looked to be heading in only one direction as Heaney stormed into an early 3-0 lead. Calm, clinical and seemingly unshakable, the Dwyers man punished every mistake and looked destined to wrap up the contest in emphatic fashion.

But John Reid had not built a reputation as one of the league’s fiercest competitors by folding under pressure.

Showing the same fighting spirit that has defined his season for TLTA, Reid clawed his way back into the match frame by frame. With the crowd fully engaged and the tension building around the venue, Reid produced a stunning turnaround to level the contest at 3-3 and force a deciding frame.

By that stage the atmosphere had become electric, with every pot, safety exchange and positional shot carrying enormous weight. The final frame was a fitting conclusion to a battle between two players who have set the standard in the Premiership this season.

Both players had opportunities, but when the pressure reached its highest point it was Heaney who managed to hold himself together. Demonstrating the composure and resilience that carried him through the campaign, he closed out the decider to finally secure the Premiership Player of the Year title.

The victory caps off a tremendous individual season for Heaney and further strengthens his standing as one of the league’s elite performers. Yet enormous credit must also go to Reid, whose remarkable comeback in the play-off embodied the quality and determination that saw him push the race all the way to the very last frame of the season.

While the Premiership race required a dramatic finale, the Championship Player of the Year award went to Paul Farrelly after a superb season of consistency and dominance.

Farrelly finished the campaign with 23 wins from 28 frames, an exceptional tally that saw him emerge as the standout performer in the Championship division. Week after week he delivered crucial victories for his side, combining heavy scoring, matchplay intelligence and reliability under pressure to establish himself as one of the most feared players in the division.

Across both divisions, the individual races showcased the incredible standard currently on display throughout the Belfast Interpool League. From Heaney and Reid producing a classic Premiership showdown to Farrelly’s relentless excellence in the Championship, the 2025/26 season will be remembered for both quality and drama in equal measure.

Frankie McMeekin of The Shamrock produced a determined and resilient display to capture the Belfast Interpool League Championship Individuals title after edging out Matthew “Doc” Doherty of CCC’s in a thrilling final that went all the way to a deciding frame in The Beehive.

With both players seeking to get their hands on the coveted title for the first time, the final provided a fitting curtain-raiser to Presentation Night and delivered drama from the opening break right through to the final black. It was Doherty who made the brighter start. Playing with confidence and attacking intent, “Doc” showcased the aggressive brand of pool that had carried him through the earlier rounds, racing into a commanding 2-0 lead and putting himself firmly in control of proceedings.

However, McMeekin refused to panic.

The Shamrock man settled into the contest and began to find his rhythm, producing a superb response when it mattered most. Displaying patience, composure and excellent shot selection, he reeled off three consecutive frames to turn the match on its head and move to the hill at 3-2.

With the title now within touching distance for McMeekin, Doherty demonstrated exactly why he had reached the final. Showing tremendous character under pressure, he dug deep to claim the sixth frame and force a deciding seventh frame, ensuring the Championship crown would be settled in the most dramatic fashion possible.

The decider proved to be a tense affair, with both players creating opportunities and knowing that a single mistake could prove decisive. As the pressure intensified, chances came and went at both ends of the table.

In the end, it was McMeekin who seized the moment.
When the opportunity finally presented itself, the Shamrock star stepped forward and delivered the decisive visit of the match, taking full advantage to clear up and secure a memorable 4-3 victory.

The triumph marks a significant milestone for McMeekin and caps off a superb season for The Shamrock, who have enjoyed success across multiple competitions this year.
For Doherty, there was heartbreak at the final hurdle, but his run to the final and fearless performance throughout the contest earned plenty of admiration.

On a night where both finalists showcased the very best of Championship pool, it was Frankie McMeekin who held his nerve when it mattered most to become the 2025/26 Belfast Interpool League Championship Individuals Champion.

Daniel Gorman etched his name into Belfast Interpool League history once again on Presentation Night in The Beehive, producing a championship-winning performance to reclaim the Premiership Individuals title for the first time since 2015.

The TLTA star showed the composure, resilience and class that made him a champion over a decade ago as he overcame the formidable challenge of Gerard McKeown in a gripping final that went all the way to a deciding frame.

While much of the pre-match discussion centred around McKeown’s remarkable record of five consecutive finals and three titles from his previous four appearances, it was Gorman who ultimately stole the spotlight with a display worthy of the league’s biggest individual prize.

Gorman settled quickest and immediately imposed himself on the contest, racing into a 2-0 lead with confident and assured pool. McKeown, to his credit, responded as champions do, battling back to level the match at 2-2.

The quality remained high throughout and with little separating the players, crucial middle frames saw both men miss opportunities on the black ball. Gorman capitalised, restoring his advantage and moving within a frame of glory.

Once again McKeown found an answer, forcing a deciding frame and setting up a tense finale befitting two of the league’s finest competitors.

The decisive frame began with a dry break from Gorman, seemingly handing the initiative to his opponent. However, champions seize opportunities when they arise and Gorman remained patient. When McKeown missed a yellow, the door opened and Gorman walked through it emphatically.

What followed was the clearance of a man determined to reclaim his crown. In a single visit, he swept away his remaining reds before calmly dispatching the black to seal a dramatic 4-3 victory.

The triumph marks Gorman’s first Premiership Individuals title in eleven years and serves as a reminder of his enduring quality at the highest level of the game. After years of near misses and chasing the title he once held, he finally got his hands on the trophy again.

For McKeown, another final appearance further enhances an already outstanding legacy, but this night belonged to Daniel Gorman. Under the brightest lights and with everything on the line, the TLTA man delivered when it mattered most to complete a memorable return to the summit of Belfast Interpool League singles competition.
