Not a good day at the office, against a well organised dolphin side, as we were absolutely rotten throughout. A wake up call for the lads after a decent start to the season.

Last night we travelled through to drumgeith knowing only a huge performance would see us through into the semi finals as we faced off against Stobswell.

A couple of changes from Saturdays game as injuries affected us once again. Bastow dropping out after picking up a knock on Saturday and just before kick off we lost Reece Orrock to a recurrence of his knee problem, no good for the young man who’s had no shortage of issues in this area, hopefully we see him back fit and fighting soon. In came Euan Murray and Brad Bell after another SOS call from the management team was made.

We started the game competing well and created a couple of openings with Collins and Nairn going close but after around 10 minutes Stobie begun to turn to the screw. They hit the post and forced a couple of good saves from keeper Cargill before opening the scoring 20 minutes in with a clinical finish from their number 9. We continued to push and minutes later we thought we had forced the opposition into a critical error after Grubb was pulled down by the last man as he looked to nick it past the goalkeeper, baffling decision to keep it 11v11. Soon after Stobie doubled their lead after we defended a long throw down the line poorly, once again we had ourselves an uphill battle.

A rallying call at half time from the management team led to increased aggression and better structure overall from the team however despite starting the second half the better of the sides we gifted Stobie a goal to make it 3-0. Our task to get back in the game was now looking impossible. We kept plugging away and were playing some nice stuff and got a deserved goal back through NAIRN. A wonderful jinking run down the left and he earned his slice of luck as the ball fell to him sweetly to stroke it home, we criticised the ref in the first half but it was a good bit of refereeing to allow the game to continue despite Scotty being fouled on multiple occasions. This gave us a renewed sense of purpose and did rattle our premier division opposition. The game became a fairly physical one as both teams put in some meaty challenges, at certain points it threatened to get out of hand as the ref looked to have lost control. We were leaving ourselves exposed and Stobie took advantage winning a pen after good work from their number 10, what he done next was less good as he tried to beat keeper Cargill with a panenka but Sidey read it well and remained standing to catch it easily, not a moment their 10 will want to see back. Heading in to the final minutes and we were throwing the kitchen sink at it, this paid off as WOOD made it 3-2 with an opportune finish after a scramble in the box. With 5 minutes left we knew we had time for another but at this point the game was extremely end to end as we chucked every player forward looking for an equaliser, ultimately we were unable to fashion a real chance and we exited the cup.

A lot of positives to take after running Premier division opposition so close but a few things to work on too as stobie were more clinical in both boxes and deserved to win the game.

It’s back to league action on Saturday as we face Dolphin FC.

NEXT MATCH

Tomorrow we face off against Premier Division side Stobswell AFC for a place in the semi finals of the Adamson cup.

Stobie have 6 wins from their opening 6 in the DSMFL this season so it’s a huge test for the boys but one we are relishing.

The only other time the club have faced Stobswell was in the semi final of the 2024 North of Tay and it’s fair to say we’ve had quite a turnover of players since then! Below is a photo of the team from that night with only three players remaining at the club.

It was back to cup action this morning as we faced off with Dundee West for a place in the last 8 of the Adamson cup. After Tuesday’s positive performance the management team made a couple of changes to freshen the team up after a lot of games at the beginning of the season. In came Horner, Grubb, Nairn and Clark to replace MacDonald, the injured Yule, Collins and Cargill respectively.

We looked to take the second half performance from Tuesday into today’s game and start aggressively but frankly we never got going at all in the first half. All 4 goals we conceded in the first half were preventable in their own ways. For the first we never set up well enough for our own long throw which led to the opposition being able to counter easily, they still done well to work it and punish our mistake, 1-0. After more slack play we gave away a cheap penalty after Mather brought down their winger in the box, the dubiousness of the foul was debated post match in the pub but for me it looked a clear foul, the penalty was dispatched and we were 2 down. We have often been prone to quick collapses at the beginning of this season and we were back at it again, aided this time by some questionable refereeing. One ball over the top and Dundee West made it 3, amazingly their winger was adjudged to have been inside his own half, a decision which stunned many onlookers. It was soon 4 after a mixup between coaching staff (completely not our fault btw) and players led to Bastow still having to play with an injury and we were all at sea allowing Dundee West to make it 4. A mountain to climb in the second half.

We made a change at half time bringing MacDonald back in and allowing us to push DUFF higher up, this had an affect straight away as Max flicked on a Smyth throw in to get us back in it. Soon after we scored the crucial moment of the game occurred, a loose ball on the left was picked up by Calvin wood before Dundee Wests centre half absolutely cleaned him out. A stonewall red card and you’ll be unlucky to see a worse challenge in the DSMFL this season. Thankfully Calvin was okay to continue and he soon won us a penalty, Scott Nairn delivered a great ball into the box which Calvin met before the Dundee West defender clipped the bottom of his foot, one of those fouls you seen often in football and again, a stonewaller. WOOD converted and we had ourselves truly back in the game. The momentum of the game had turned and we put our foot to the floor knowing we had a good 20 minutes of time left to score two goals, we had our third soon enough. Scott Nairn delivered another superb ball into the box, something he done all game, and it was met with a bullet header by captain Dode PATERSON, with 18 to go we smelt blood. Although momentum was firmly with us the game started to peter out and we never really fashioned a clear cut opportunity and it started to look like Tatties for our cup run. We were chucking everything at it and with two to go Dode found himself in the unfamiliar position of left wing, where he used all his knowledge of the ‘Junior Dark Arts’ to win a foul in the corner. Another great delivery from Nairn followed and after a stramash in the box Dode was brought down and we had our second penalty of the day. WOOD slotted it home again and the comeback was complete. There was a few minutes left which gave Dundee wests number 15 enough time to try two attempted headbutts on respected local firefighter Dode Paterson, just not cricket from their 15 especially after Dodes summer of fighting wildfires in the Cairngorms. The final whistle blow as we went to penalties.

AMMOS WIN 4 - 2 ON PENS

A superb comeback from the lads, aided and abetted by a complete headsgone from the opposition, it happens to the best of us. Two superb penalty saves from keeper Clark in the shootout and four excellently taken pens from the lads seen us through.

Up next on Tuesday it’s the quarter final of this same competition and it’s a real tough one for the boys. We will face 3 In a row NOT champions Stobswell for the first time in the DSMFL, we will need to be at it more than today to get a positive result.

On Tuesday the 19th August 2025 we travelled through to Dundee to play in our league opener against Riverside athletic. So last week when the Fixture Computer threw out Riverside athletic for our league opener exactly a year on there was a few eyebrows raised from the more conspiratorial amongst us. With the poll sitting at 10 for the Tuesday game we requested a free week at late notice, which was understandably denied as it was put in after the deadline. But after Saturdays storming result, managers Booth and Land got the begging bowl out and asked the boys to dig deep once again to secure early finishes, shift swaps and even in some cases holidays to make sure we had the best squad to pick from. So it came to this evenings game and after some great work from the lads we were able to pick a strong squad to take to drumgeith for this crucial early season league game.

We started the brighter of the two teams in the opening exchanges and the first chance of the game fell our way. Wood with a free kick opportunity from about 25 yards which struck the woodwork. Striking the bar and post became a theme of the game for our number 7. After a bright start Riverside started to push us high and for most of the first half it felt we were continually defending set pieces, we stood firm though and had some of our own openings on the break but some slack passing and poor decision making meant we never really had a clear cut chance. The best chance of the half fell to Riversides number 9 but a stunning block from Bastow prevented him from opening the scoring.

Into the second half and we really started to dominate and turn the screw creating our first real openings of the game. Wood struck the bar again and Nairn MacDonalds header just went over the bar. The pressure was starting to tell and on the hour mark we had our opener. Superb work from Wood in the middle of the park as he released PATERSON down the line, he held the ball in superbly and turned his man to find a yard of space to finish with a lovely reverse shot into the near corner. Rohan’s first league goal for us this season, he really is like a new signing after having to stop playing last year due to work commitments, a terrific addition to our squad. Soon after taking the lead Riverside began to push hard for an equaliser and they got it as we failed to defend the second phase of a free kick. Our failure to clear our lines from dead balls would punish us again minutes later as we had about 5 opportunities to clear our lines from another free kick before Riversides number 12 bundled home for his second of the game. As Riverside tired we grew into the game again with Wood having another effort from distance striking the bar, this time deflected, truly ridiculous run of bad luck for the young man, one passer by even suggested he had been cursed by an African witch doctor employed by a rival Arbroath team, a serious allegation and one the club would like to distance itself from. Second half sub Scott Nairn had a good effort saved by the goalie too. It was looking like another hard luck story for the boys against Riverside but our pressure told, with Wood striking the bar again from a free kick the rebound fell to HORNER and he struck low and hard to equalise. There was one more chance to win it as Calvin had another effort hit the bar which looked to be looping in, it would’ve been some way to win the game and some on lookers even suggested a deserved one, but with riverside having efforts of there own go close and forcing one absolutely superb save from goalie Cargill at 2-1, maybe a draw was a fair result at the end of the day.

MOTM went to Jonathon Bastow after a superb performance at centre back alongside captain Dode Paterson. After leaving the vics towards the back end of last season we did sign JB but he played a combined 19 minutes across two games as a calf injury plagued him. It’s great to have him back fit and able to contribute to the team, another great addition to the squad.

A decent point to start our league campaign and one we will take after a game where momentum swayed between both teams.

It’s on to Saturday and back to cup action as we face our third team from the Premier Division this season already when we take on Dundee West in the last 16 of the Adamson cup.
