Nearly 40% of the world’s oceans are currently experiencing marine heatwaves, with parts of the Pacific Ocean and Mediterranean Sea reaching more than 10°F (5.6°C) above average. These record-breaking temperatures are storing enormous amounts of heat that can intensify extreme weather worldwide.
Why does this matter?
🌡️ Hotter Heatwaves: Warm oceans release heat into the atmosphere, making land heatwaves more frequent and intense.
🌧️ Heavier Rainfall & Flooding: A warmer atmosphere holds more moisture, increasing the chances of powerful downpours and flash floods.
🌀 Stronger Storms: Hurricanes and tropical cyclones gain energy from warmer seas, leading to stronger winds, heavier rain, and more destructive storm surges.
🌍 Changing Global Weather: Climate patterns such as El Niño can release even more stored ocean heat, disrupting rainfall, droughts, and weather patterns across the planet.
Our oceans absorb over 90% of the excess heat caused by greenhouse gases. While this has slowed atmospheric warming, it has also turned the oceans into a vast reservoir of energy that is now fueling more extreme weather.

🇦🇺 Australia Is Quietly Drifting Across the Planet
Australia is moving north at about 7 centimeters (2.8 inches) every year, making it the fastest-moving continent on Earth. This steady motion happens because the Indo-Australian tectonic plate is being pushed by powerful geological forces, including mantle convection and seafloor spreading beneath the Indian Ocean.
The movement is so gradual that people can't feel it, but its effects are surprisingly real. Over time, Australia shifted more than 1 meter from its mapped position, creating small but important GPS inaccuracies. To keep navigation systems reliable, Geoscience Australia updated the country's official coordinate system by 1.8 meters in 2017.
It's an incredible reminder that our planet is constantly changing—even the solid ground beneath us is never truly standing still.

🌍 Earth's "Normal" Climate Is Now Hotter Than the Dust Bowl Era
The summer of 1936 is remembered as one of the most extreme heat events in U.S. history during the devastating Dust Bowl. Yet despite that record-breaking heat, the global climate was still cooler than it is today.
According to NOAA, July 2025 was the third-warmest July ever recorded worldwide, continuing a long-term warming trend driven mainly by increasing greenhouse gas emissions.
Today, Earth's average global temperature is about 1.0°C (1.8°F) above the 20th-century average, meaning that an ordinary year in today's climate is globally warmer than the average conditions during one of North America's most notorious historic heat periods.
The warming trend shows no sign of slowing. In fact, 9 of the 10 warmest Julys on record have occurred within the past decade, underscoring the accelerating impact of global climate change.

🌍 Earth's Interior: A Hidden World Beneath Our Feet

Earth's internal structure is one of the planet's greatest mysteries. Humans have drilled only about 12 kilometers below the surface—a tiny distance compared to Earth's 6,371-kilometer radius.

So how do scientists know what lies deep inside? They study seismic waves produced by earthquakes. As these waves travel through Earth, they change speed and direction when passing through different layers, revealing the planet's hidden interior.

The crust, where all life exists, is incredibly thin. If Earth were a 30-centimeter classroom globe, the entire crust—including the tallest mountains and deepest ocean trenches—would be less than 1 millimeter thick, like a thin coat of varnish.

At the very center lies the solid inner core. Even though temperatures exceed 5,400°C—hotter than the Sun's surface—the immense pressure, about 3.6 million times Earth's atmospheric pressure, keeps the iron-nickel core solid.

Surrounding it is the liquid outer core, where molten iron constantly circulates. This movement generates Earth's magnetic field, creating a protective shield that deflects the solar wind and has helped preserve life on our planet for billions of years.

In 1975, history was made on another world. 🚀

For the very first time, humanity witnessed the surface of another planet.

The Soviet spacecraft Venera 9 became the first mission in history to successfully send back an image from the surface of Venus. After surviving an intense descent through the planet’s thick, toxic atmosphere, the lander touched down on a harsh landscape covered with dark, jagged rocks beneath a glowing orange sky.

Despite facing one of the most extreme environments in our solar system, Venera 9 captured and transmitted the first-ever photograph from the surface of another planet before its mission came to an end.

Venus was anything but welcoming:
🔥 Surface temperature: 465°C (870°F) — hot enough to melt lead
🌪️ Atmospheric pressure: 90× stronger than Earth’s
☁️ Thick carbon dioxide atmosphere with clouds of sulfuric acid

This remarkable achievement proved that even the most hostile worlds could be explored, marking a historic milestone in planetary exploration and inspiring future missions across our solar system.

🌍🔭 The James Webb Space Telescope has revealed another fascinating clue in the search for life beyond Earth.

Scientists may have detected dimethyl sulfide (DMS) in the atmosphere of the exoplanet K2-18b. On Earth, this molecule is produced almost exclusively by living organisms, especially microscopic marine phytoplankton.

Webb also detected methane (CH₄) and carbon dioxide (CO₂), strengthening the possibility that K2-18b could be a Hycean world—a planet with a hydrogen-rich atmosphere and a vast liquid water ocean beneath its clouds.

However, this discovery is not yet confirmed. Researchers say more observations over the coming year will be needed to determine whether the DMS signal is real or caused by another process.

Even so, the fact that we can analyze the atmosphere of a planet located 120 light-years away is an extraordinary achievement.

If future observations confirm these findings, it could become one of the most important milestones in humanity's search for life beyond our Solar System.
