Rounds that count. đŸ”„

Layouts with measured difficulty now show it clearly, along with whether rounds played there count toward your rating.

Your rating only means something if the rounds behind it do. Now you can see which ones qualify before you start.

And handicap is free for everyone this year. 🏆

Have great throws! đŸ„

10 years of Upsi wouldn’t have happened without you.

Over the years, thousands of people have contributed to Upsi in ways big and small.

You’ve sent us feedback and feature ideas.

You’ve reported bugs, tested new things and told us when something didn’t make sense.

Volunteers have added courses, updated layouts and helped verify the information that other disc golfers rely on when they head out to play.

Some of you have even given your time and skills directly to Upsi — helping with development, design and plenty of things behind the scenes.

And then there are all the rounds.

Every person who invited a friend, kept score, tried a new feature or simply decided to open Upsi again for the next round helped make the app what it is today.

So when we say we’ve been building Upsi for 10 years, “we” has always meant more than just the people working here.

A lot of Upsi has been built together with the disc golf community.

And these days, one of the ways we try to give something back to the disc golf community is through the Upsi Team — supporting players as they chase their disc golf dreams.

Thank you for the ideas, the time, the criticism, the encouragement and the trust.

The first 10 years have your fingerprints all over them. đŸ„

10 years of building Upsi together.

One thing about Upsi has stayed remarkably consistent over the years:

disc golfers keep telling us what they want next.

Sometimes it’s a small improvement.

Sometimes it becomes an entirely new part of the app.

Game modes. Handicaps. Putting statistics. Course maps. Rankings. Ratings. Guest Players.

A lot of what Upsi is today started with someone simply asking:

“Could Upsi do this?”

And because we’ve always been a small team, those ideas don’t disappear into some giant feedback system.

They reach the people actually working on Upsi.

Not every request becomes a feature. Not every idea works exactly as first imagined.

But listening to disc golfers has shaped Upsi from the beginning.

We still think that’s the right way to do it.

And right now, we’re listening again.

Our feedback survey is open in the Upsi app, so if there’s something you’d like us to improve, change or build next, let us know.

Who knows, you just might be suggesting a feature we’ll be talking about 10 years from now. đŸ„

From Tali to Worlds.

In 2016, almost nobody had heard of Upsi yet.

For one of our very first videos, we asked a few people from the local disc golf community to come throw with us at Tali.

During the warm-up, the very first throw hit the metal on hole 12.

Naturally, the cameras weren’t properly rolling yet.

And naturally, we couldn’t repeat it no matter how many times we tried.

That was the scale of Upsi back then: a new Finnish disc golf app, a small group of people around it, and a lot of belief that it could become something.

Nine years later, the Disc Golf World Championships came to Finland. 🏆

For the first time ever, the Pro Worlds were held outside North America — and Upsi was an Official Partner.

Seeing Upsi on the Beast, with the best players in the world competing and huge galleries following them through the Finnish woods, made those early days at Tali feel very far away.

And somehow, even that wasn’t the end of the story.

Today, Upsi is an Official Partner of the PDGA.

That one definitely wasn’t on the roadmap back then.

A pretty special place to be 10 years later. đŸ„

Did you know you could once buy discs through Upsi?

Yep. In 2019, we started experimenting with something quite different from scorecards and game invites: selling disc golf gear. đŸ„

The idea went further than a small test. By 2020, we were working directly with disc manufacturers and had actual disc sales integrated into Upsi.

There was even a limited Upsi-branded disc you could buy to support the app development.

Looking back, it’s easy to imagine there was always a clear plan for what Upsi would eventually become.

There wasn’t.

We tried things. We experimented. We followed ideas that seemed promising and learned from the ones that didn’t become permanent parts of Upsi.

Selling discs was one of those chapters.

Eventually, we realized where we could make the biggest difference wasn’t in selling the equipment you take to the course.

It was in building the app you take with you.

So the disc shop disappeared.

Upsi stayed.

And these days, we’re quite happy leaving the selling of discs to others. đŸ„

Upsi Black started with one feature: a black theme.

In 2021, one of the things disc golfers kept asking us for was surprisingly simple:

Could Upsi have a black theme?

So we built one.

At the same time, people were also looking for a way to support Upsi.

So we made the black theme available through a subscription.

That was pretty much the beginning of Upsi Black.

Behind the scenes, that support mattered.

Running an app like Upsi comes with very real costs, and for the first time, people who wanted to help us keep building it had an easy way to do so.

From 2022 onward, Upsi Black started growing into something more, with doubles rounds, throw distance measuring and other game modes joining the subscription — and new Black features have been added ever since.

Today, Upsi Black is a lot more than a color theme.

But the black theme is still there.

And it’s funny to think that the whole thing started because disc golfers simply asked us:

“Could Upsi be black?” đŸ–€đŸ„

Did you know Upsi once tried to build a disc golf smartwatch app? ⌚

Years ago, we started wondering: could a smartwatch measure the speed of your disc golf throw directly from your wrist?

And it went quite a bit further than just an idea.

We built a prototype app, tested throws, collected data and even launched an Indiegogo campaign to see if there was enough interest to take it further.

There was just one problem.

The smartwatch accelerometers available at the time couldn’t give us the data we needed. A disc golf throw was simply too fast — instead of capturing the full movement, the readings essentially flatlined.

We looked into whether those limitations could be overcome.

At the time, they couldn’t.

So the Upsi smartwatch app never made it past the prototype stage.

The funny part?

Years later, we still occasionally get messages asking:

“Hey, is that Upsi watch app coming?”

Back then, measuring a disc golf throw with your watch sounded pretty futuristic.

Today, not so much.

Sometimes an idea isn’t bad. It’s just a little early. âŒšđŸ„

Would you want an Upsi smartwatch app today? 😉

Where It All Started

Before Upsi was Upsi, there was even a prototype running on a Symbian phone.

But the real idea behind Upsi came from something much more familiar.

You had your work friends, old friends, disc golf friends — different groups of people you liked to play with. You’d head out for a round with one group, only to hear afterwards:

“Why didn’t you invite me? I would’ve come too.”

So when we started building Upsi in 2016, scorekeeping was naturally part of it — there really weren’t many good options for that either.

But Upsi was meant to bring all those people together in one place.

Find a round. Invite your friends. Play together. Follow the scores live. Talk about the round afterwards.

That was the heart of Upsi then, and it still is today. ❀

And the name?

We spent quite a bit of time thinking about that too. In the end, Upsi came from something very simple: an old Finnish disc golf term for the familiar upside-down throw.

Short. Easy to say. Easy to write. And unmistakably disc golf.

The app looks very different now.

The name — and the idea behind it — stuck. đŸ„

Upsi turns 10. 🎉

Back in 2016, three disc golfers with coding skills started building something they felt was missing from the game.

The idea was simple: bring disc golf friends together, make scorekeeping smoother, and above all, make disc golf more fun together.

A lot has happened since.

What started as a small Finnish project is now used by more than 100,000 disc golfers around the world. Upsi has grown, changed direction more than once, gained a lot of features, made a few mistakes and learned plenty along the way.

But the reason we keep building it hasn’t really changed.

Disc golf is better together.

So, to celebrate our 10th anniversary, Upsi Black is €10 for a full year.

And most importantly: thank you. 🙏

If you’ve played a round with Upsi at any point over the years, you’re part of this story.

The first 10 years are in the books.

Here’s to the next round. đŸ„

See the course before you've thrown a disc. đŸ—ș

Virtual course maps show tee and basket positions for every hole. Open it before you go and you'll know exactly where you're heading. 🧭

Especially useful somewhere new, where hole 4 isn't always obvious from hole 3.

Have great throws! đŸ„
