Clamp dye techniques originally originated in Japan. In Japan it goes by the name ITAJIME. Basically it involves 3 step process of Fold-Resist with clamp-Dyeing.

In Bhuj, Gujarat, India, the clamp dye techniques came into practice about 30-35 years back. During that time, clamp dyeing techniques were used in lungi (sarong: a traditional garment worn around the waist) to produce various designs.
