Den sikre cykelvej til skole:

Bike buses are an increasingly popular way for children to travel safely to school - and kids just seem to love them... 🚲

"I love the bike bus because it's always really friendly!" says a new convert.

Bike buses are when kids travel in a large group on bikes, escorted by adults, stopping for pickups and drop-offs along the way.

They started in Spain and Portugal a few years ago, but they're really catching on in the US thanks to Sam, 'Coach' Balto.

Sam, a PE teacher, set up his first bike bus in Portland, Oregon, back in 2022.

He began with just five to 10 children, and a handful of volunteers, but the idea became so popular that, within three months, a third of the school was cycling in.

He's since set up Bike Bus Worldwide, with celebrities like American singer and actor Justin Timberlake and Swedish pop star Zara Larsson joining in.

Sam says bike buses have many benefits.

"[They're] a really wonderful way to help build kids' independence... They do better academically. They get in trouble less. They have better social relationships. And you get the fresh air."

On a bike bus in London, UK, Charlotte Claydon leads about 20 children in fluorescent bibs like a mother duck and her little ducklings.

Charlotte says she used to drive her kids to school, but found the school run very stressful - and then she found out about Sam.

"There were images of this guy with what looked like 200 kids shouting, singing, laughing. It looked like a disco on wheels," she says.

Charlotte set up a bike bus to her local school, and the kids love it.

"It's kind of fun because you can see like everyone riding, talking and riding with your friends and stuff," says one child.

"You can ride along with all your friends and you can chat and you don't have to be worried about all the cars," says another child.

Liam Frost, the head teacher at Primrose Hill Primary School, says he loves seeing the children arriving on the bike bus to whistles and music.

"You see a wave of smiles going down the street" he says. "It's massively empowering for the children as well, to be reclaiming the streets."

Dutch teens (12–18) cycle more than any other age group, both in frequency and distance.
