OG Anunoby’s tip-in will live forever in New York basketball folklore.

But its real significance might be 3,000 miles away.

Britain has never been short of basketball talent. It’s been short of a pathway: courts that don’t cost a fortune, a league worth aspiring to, a reason for the next kid to believe.

NBA Europe, on schedule for 2027 with London and Manchester both targeted for franchises, could be exactly that. Billion-dollar bids are already on the table, the NBA is committing more than $3bn, and Β£10m is going into UK grassroots.

A London kid just won the NBA title. The only question now is how many follow him.

NBA Finals hero OG Anunoby stands at 'top of British basketball history' and on brink of glory with New York Knicks 13/06/2026

OG Anunoby just delivered the single biggest moment in British basketball history and he knows how much it means.

In the era of minimal attention spans and the need for clips to grip you, the boy from Harlesden's tip-in with 1.2 seconds on the clock to complete the largest comeback in NBA Finals history had all of the ingredients.

His coach called it "the most iconic shot in New York basketball history", a teammate called it the "right hand from God".

All during the most-watched NBA Finals since Michael Jordan was hooping.

This is major news, and part of the start of the explosion of basketball in the UK.

But it's not just about the moment itself. It was what OG wants it to mean: more youth courts, more academies, more kids picking up a ball early and falling for the game.

Basketball is now the fastest-growing sport in the UK and second only to football among team sports, and a record four British players started this NBA season on rosters. The moment and the movement are lining up.

And it's only going to get bigger.

Game 5 is tonight. Full piece for Sky Sports below.

For EuroLeague clubs, NBA Europe just stopped being a "maybe".

Adam Silver says the NBA will "move forward either way". Mark Tatum says the only guaranteed route to a permanent spot is a winning bid. No legacy pass. No trophy-cabinet exemption.

That's the message to Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern and everyone else. American franchise economics, meets European football culture.

What a week for NBA Europe.

Tatum: final phase before an October 2027 launch, ready to go with FIBA if the EuroLeague won't come.

Silver at the Finals: bids by end of June, awards in autumn, 16 teams – 12 permanent, 4 on sporting merit.

AS: Madrid plays EuroLeague next season. Marca: stays, but one eye on NBA Europe. El PaΓs: deal closed, announcement after the club's presidential election. Eurohoops keeps it honest: the length isn't public.

It's all about timing. It's all about contracts. The read inside the process: options kept open, not lock-in.

The 2027 fork is the real question.

This wasn't a "we're still talking about it" update.

Speaking before Game 1 of the Finals, Adam Silver gave NBA Europe a calendar:

– Final bids from franchises due end of June
– Review over the summer
– Franchise awards potentially in autumn
– Tip-off October next year, the 2027-28 season

16 teams, 12 permanent, built with FIBA. And Wembanyama in the Finals while he says it.

This is the bit people look back on. That's why this week matters.

Filed this for Sky Sports this morning:

- NBA Europe is on schedule for 2027-28
- Final bids by end of June
- Franchise announcements expected in autumn
- Manchester and London firmly in the running
- EuroLeague line hardened by the NBA.

This is the story I keep coming back to. It’s not just basketball arriving in Europe, it’s the collision of American franchise economics with European football culture - and nobody’s properly mapped what that looks like yet.

It’s why I started The Crossover – a podcast that goes deep on what NBA Europe actually means, who’s bidding, who’s running the numbers, and what the basketball ecosystem looks like by the time tip-off arrives in October 2027.

Wembanyama coming to Manchester, Doncic buying into a club in Rome, final bids land in three weeks.

This is about to get VERY loud.
