Before we correct our children… can we pause?

Take a breath. And ask ourselves:

“What do they need from me right now… my solution or my presence?”

So often, our instinct is to fix, explain, or teach.

But sometimes the most powerful thing we can offer is simply our calm presence.

Compassionate listening means listening beyond the behaviour and becoming curious about the feelings underneath.

Because connection opens the door to learning.

Connection first. Correction later. 🌿

in my latest blog article “Connection Before Correction: The Power of Compassionate Listening” I share more about all of this, ending with some practical tools. Link in the bio or comments below.

One evening recently, Sophia asked me if we could go out for dinner.

"Just us."

I smiled and asked, "What's the occasion?"

And she said, "To celebrate life together with you."

I paused. She took me a little bit by surprise in a very positive way.
Children have such a beautiful way of reminding us what really matters.

In our busy lives, we often celebrate birthdays, achievements, special occasions...

But how often do we celebrate intentionally simply being together?

That evening reminded me that connection isn't built through grand gestures.

It's built through the little moments. The conversations. The laughter. The presence.

When children consistently feel emotionally safe, heard and valued, they naturally want to stay connected.

And perhaps that is one of the greatest gifts we can nurture—not children who simply listen to us, but children who want to still be close to us as they grow.

That evening wasn't just a dinner. It was a reminder to celebrate life itself... together. No distractions. Just chatting, little laughters ….

I am still learning as a mum of a growing up child, but I value the connection and whilst we have our challenges, moments like this remind me that building a relationship with our children is precious and so valuable.

And interestingly enough, this real experience came right after I have written my latest blog article ‘Connection Before Correction: The Power of Compassionate Listening’…. Coincidence or synchronicity, call it whatever you want 😊To read the article that includes practical tips for your parenting toolkit follow the link in the bio or comments below.

When emotions are big, little ones don’t need more words.

They need safety. They need connection.

They need a calm presence to help them find their calm again.

A child in the middle of a meltdown is not ready for a lesson. The lesson comes later—when they feel seen, safe and connected.

Of course, boundaries still matter. But connection is what helps children receive them.

🌿 Connection before correction.

A few weeks ago, we spent the weekend at a beach resort. Like any holiday spot, there were toy and souvenir shops everywhere.

One evening, my daughter Sophia wanted another "squishy." I said no, as we had already bought a few that weekend.

Walking back to our room, I could see the tears welling up in her eyes. She didn't want to talk about it, and I didn't force her.

I just gave her my presence, held her space, and stayed by her side until she fell asleep.

The next day on our way home, we stopped at the mall and ended up in Zara—one of Sophia’s absolute favourites. Her face completely lit up seeing all the clothes. Her excitement was so contagious that I couldn’t help but treat her to a few pieces.

She was thrilled and thanked me. I realised this was the perfect, teachable moment.

"Is shopping at Zara better than getting that squishy yesterday?" I asked.
"Of course, Mummy!" she replied quickly.

"And yesterday you were so upset with me," I smiled. "So, what do you learn from that?"

She just smiled back, but it opened up a beautiful conversation. We talked about how we don't always get what we want instantly. Sometimes, if we practice a little patience, we end up with something much better—something we actually need or enjoy more.

Patience is such a vital quality, but it's incredibly hard to teach right now. Everything in our children's world is built around instant gratification.

This experience reminded me of a golden rule: Connection before Correction.

When Sophia was upset at the resort, she wasn't in a state to learn a lesson. I just offered my presence. It was only the next day, when she was happy and regulated, that the "correction" (the life lesson) actually made sense to her.

Our kids don't need us to lecture them when they are down. They just need us to ride out the storm with them, so we can look at the rainbow together the next day. ❤️
