Lost in Paris as a child… Would you freeze, fight or flight?

This experience shaped how I have faced challenges ever since.

At age 11, I had the opportunity to embark on an extraordinary adventure from winterless Colombia to snowy France with my 30 classmates to learn to ski.

Paris welcomed us first for five days of cultural exploration. One day at the Centre Pompidou, while watching what for a kid was a mesmerizing performance, my class disappeared.

I could feel panic grow inside of me: how would I ever manage to find my way in a foreign city and make the 9000km back home? I would never see my family again.

Two classmates equally lost, found me frozen, on the verge of tears. And I will never forget when one of these boys whom I barely knew said “Don’t worry Monica, we will find a way”.

He then asked us to put together whatever money we had - barely one Euro, we would take a bus to get back to the hotel. Though we had no clue where it was or how Paris’s buses operated.

However, his courage and determination ignited hope within me.

I laugh now, remembering our naïve plan, but it gifted me a lifelong lesson: when faced with challenges, when things seem desperate, take action. Find your courage.

There is always a solution.
