Nice, Nanjing! On the morning of August 25, the “Jinling Memories” Cross-Media Art International Workshop kicked off. Over 100 teachers and students from China, the UK, and the US explored Nanjing’s beautiful mountains, rivers, cityscapes, and forests while immersing themselves in its rich historical and cultural heritage. Through walking and creating, they produced unique artworks that capture the spirit of “Jinling Memories” (Nanjing’s ancient name). What does a 2,000-year-old clay jar tell us about ancient life?

📍 This is a pickling jar — and it was found in a Han Dynasty tomb near Nanjing.

Two mouths. A rim designed to hold water. The exact same design as the pickling jars still used in Chinese kitchens today.

Archaeologist Xu Zhiqiang explains: “This jar is the same shape as the ones we still use. It shows that even 2,000 years ago, people knew how to preserve food to enrich their diet.”

The Han believed in “death as life.” If you loved pickled vegetables in life, you’d want them in the afterlife too.

Some recipes are so good, they survive 2,000 years.
