Looking for a nice cycling weekend on 11/12 July? Xiwuqi's annual Grassland Festival in Inner Mongolia features two road bike and two MTB races on its programme. Road cyclists can do a 100km on Saturday afternoon and a 125km on Sunday. Mountanbikers have 40km on Saturday afternoon and 81km on Sunday.

Runners can also join the event with a 23km offroad challenge run on Saturday morning.

And if you like to do it all, you might as well take part in the sprint duathlon on Friday and aim for the King of the Grasslands crown!

The next edition of Route 99 Xiwuqi King of the Grasslands is scheduled for 10-12 July 2026. Starting again with the sprint duathlon, the KOG multisport endurance challenge will also again feature a long distance grassland run, two long distance road cycling races (granfondo) and two MTB races. More details to come within the next two weeks.

Stage 5 in Xishuangbanna was again the final race of the event, but on a modified course compared to last year. 133km with 2500hm and -unfortunately- again rain during a large part of the race. While Li Si was already almost certain of winning the women's Granfondo Yunnan for the second consecutive year, the men's race still had three riders within five seconds in the GC. However, already on the first long climb of the day it was clear that Chen Hao had the best legs. Wang Jin and Zhou Keqiang got dropped and had to spend energy to get back to the front, which they only achieved at km 81 when the second and tougher climb began. Chen Hao did not have it easy himself, though. When Chen Hongbo and Li Peilin attacked, he could not respond. Chen Hongbo proved to be the best climber and descender to win the stage , 44 seconds ahead of Li Peilin. Artsiom Rusanenka had his best day of the week and took a great third place. Chen Xiangyuan took fourth ahead of Chen Hao in fifth. The latter won the men's Granfondo Yunnan. Wang Jin and Zhou Keqiang only managed 11th and 12th yesterday.

Stage 4 in Pu'Er , 108km : a dry day ! Riders could really enjoy the great course through the tea plantations in Pu'Er . The competition up front was also very exciting to follow and ended up in a five-men sprint, with Chen Hao taking the stage win and the yellow jersey. Zhou Ke Qiang followed in his slipstream - second place - , but GC leader in the yellow jersey Wang Jin missed the breakaway and lost his leader's jersey by a mere two seconds to Chen Hao. With also Zhou Ke Qiang just five seconds behind in GC, Saturday's last stage in Xishuangbanna promises to become really exciting to watch!

Li Si was fastest woman as every day - she is in a class on her own.

Stage 3 in Fengqing unfortunately got hit by massive rainfall (a returning theme this autumn in these parts of Southeast Asia) causing severe mudslides and even a road collapse. After the long distance race of 156km across Lucky Dragon Mountain was already cancelled as a result of the damage the night before, also the short distance course of 55km got neutralised on Tuesday morning. As in Pu'Er last year, riders were permitted to ride the 55km course at their own pace without competition. Call it a coffee and tea ride. While the postponed start was dry, riders again got wet after some 25km into the ride. Nevertheless, the camaraderie amongst the 1500 riders and the many local spectators along the route gave plenty to smile about.

Stage 2 in Bao Shan / Tengchong developed into a true epic cycling day, as heavy rain showers battered the 1800 riders after 50 km of the 160km. Temperatures dropped accordingly, which made the already tough course in Tengchong even harder to complete. Halfway into it, the race director decided to move the finish line of the race to the summit of D**g Shan (East Mountain) at km 137, to avoid trouble in the fast descent back to the city. A decision that was welcomed by nearly everyone given the freezing conditions on the mountain. In the men's race, a quartet began the final long climb together. Richard Welch got dropped with 5km to go, leaving yellow jersey Wang Jin, last year's winner Chen Hao and Zhou Ke Qiang battling for the stage win. In a short sprint. Chen Hao proved to be strongest. Wang Jin stays in yellow. In the women's race it was again Li Si who proved strongest. She did not even look that tired at the finish. Qiu Yin was second over 15 minutes later. Behind her, it was tight for the remaining places on the podium.

Stage 1 in Dehong / Mangshi saw a fantastic solo effort from 24-year-old Wang Jin, already a brave attacker last year. Wang Jin went into an early breakaway group of six on the flat roads that led up to the start of the Jiandong Mountain climb, a long climb with 1000 hm vertical gain. Wang Jin dropped his companions quickly and went solo from there to the finish back in Mangshi after 116 km. At times the gap to his nearest chasers was just a dozen of seconds, but in the long descent he managed to extend it again and win the stage and thus the first yellow jersey.

Li Si, winner of the Granfondo Yunnan 2024, was again the best of the female riders - winning solo as well, as part of a substantial group with male riders.

Mangshi Prologue Duo TT - Great weather and cycling conditions for the Prologue Duo TT today in Dehong/Mangshi City. 9km against the clock with teams of two riders in 3 categories (male, female, mixed). Victories went to Xia Wei and Zhou Cheng in the men's in 12'00", Liang Yanqing and Shen Xiaomin in 14'11", and last year's Granfondo Yunnan overall winners Chen Hao and Li Si in the mixed category in 12'31"!

The awards for the female podium were handed out by none other than triple world champion Peter Sagan.
