The autistic need to rest after outings and socializing is so real 🥲

Sometimes something can be fun, meaningful, and genuinely fill your cup… and still take a lot out of you. Needing extra recovery time afterward doesn’t mean you did anything wrong or that you shouldn’t have gone. Your capacity just deserves to be considered too.

And if things like socializing, daily tasks, sensory overwhelm, masking, or simply keeping up with life are taking more out of you than you have to give lately, you don’t have to navigate that alone.

That’s exactly why I created BFP Burnout Recovery Hub: my community space for neurodivergent adults navigating burnout, with support for your mind, body, nervous system, routines, and everyday life.

I'd love to have you come join the community 🤗

"To be loved but not known is comforting but superficial..." - Timothy Keller

As humans, we all have a need to be known, seen, understood, and chosen with that full understanding, but for autistic people, it can be even harder to find people who fully know and love us for who we are.

Growing up, we often have to either mask in order to get through or survive, or if we do show our authentic selves, we are often judged, bullied, abused, rejected, or worse.

I know for me, there have been very few people in my life so far to see the full me, and some cases have been positive while others have been negative.

Sometimes we hold back and have walls up around us, keeping ourselves safe in case of being hurt, but other times our need to be known and understand can make us share too much too soon.

Sometimes we can't tell who is safe to be ourselves around until it's too late, and many people label us as weird or awkward, or even take advantage of us.

Long story short, your need to be fully known is human, and the right people will accept YOU and how you go about connecting with them 🫂💚

I LOVE the beach, but between the sensory stuff, change in routine, executive functioning and energy it takes, there’s a lot that goes into making a beach day actually enjoyable for me.

Here are 5 things that help:

🌊 1. Preparing for the change in routine
Knowing where we’re going and having a rough plan for the day helps a lot.

🥪 2. Planning food ahead of time
Safe foods packed, a good breakfast beforehand, and knowing where I can eat if we’re eating out.

🎒 3. Packing for all my needs
Extra clothes, towels, water, sensory supports, meds, sunscreen and all the “just in case” things.

🩴 4. Accommodating my sensory needs
Designated sandy shoes, clean feet before leaving, avoiding the beach washroom, and going with people I feel safe around.

🛋️ 5. Planning for recovery afterwards
Even things I love can take a lot of energy, so I make sure I have time to decompress afterwards.

Accommodating myself doesn’t take away from the experience. It’s what allows me to enjoy it. 💗

What are your beach day non negotiables? 👇

I got tired of planners that my brain avoided like the plague, so I created my own 💃

If you're neurodivergent and feel the same about traditional planners...

Comment BRAIN to get your copy of the Executive Functioning Workbook (vol 1) printable (& poster-able) digital planner worksheets ✨

Your brain will thank you 😁
