Youâre not âtoo sensitiveâ if vocal lessons leave you feeling tense and intimidated.
So many singers think their coach has to be a vocal superhero.
â¨They donât.
â¨Their job isnât to impress you.
â¨Their job is to help you unlock your voice.
Look for the coach who:
* explains whatâs happening in your body
* makes things feel simpler, not more confusing
* walks you into freedom instead of tension
Thatâs coaching.
â¨Stop shopping for singers. Start looking for teachers.

Stage fright isnât always about being afraid to get on stage.
For singers, it can be the racing heart. The shallow breath. The tight throat. The dry mouth. The mind that suddenly forgets the words youâve sung a hundred times.
And then there are the thoughts:
What if I mess up?
What if my voice doesnât cooperate?
What if I canât do what I know I can do?
Thatâs why I think itâs more helpful to look at stage fright as a mind + body response to performing under pressureânot simply a lack of confidence.
When you understand how your stage fright shows up, you can start preparing for it.
Not by trying to guarantee youâll never feel nervous.
By learning how to soothe the body and prepare the mind so you have more options when those nerves arrive.
I created my free Stage Fright Mind Map: Your Path to Confident Performance to help you see the bigger picture.

đ¤ Musicians: What do you wish singers understood?
Calling all guitarists, bassists, drummers, keyboard players, horn players, accompanists, session players and anyone else whoâs spent time backing a singer. đ
Iâve created a quick 3-minute anonymous survey to hear what itâs like from your side of the stage.
What drives you crazy? What do you wish singers understood? And just as importantly, what do the really great singers do that makes playing with them a pleasure?
đ Take the anonymous survey: https://forms.cloud.microsoft/r/MceXbikESb
No names. No identifying your bandmates. No singer-bashing. Just tell me what you wish singers knew.
You can run scales for years and still never touch your real voice.
ďż˝Hey, itâs not because youâre not talented!
When your body is tense, your mind is doubting you, and your voice has learned to stay small to feel safe.
Real singing doesnât start with exercises.ďż˝It starts with your thoughts, your body, and the emotional truth youâre willing to feel when you open your mouth.
Before your next practice, try the 30-second reset from this reel:
ďż˝Soft shoulders. Unclenched jaw. Breath in your belly.ďż˝Then let your next note come from that softer place of acceptanceâŚand notice what changes.
If you want a space where your real voice finally feels safe to show up, check out my resources for singers

Save this for your next practice & send it to a singer who needs this reminder.
Comparison is straight-up lying about your voice.
That sting when you hear a great vocalist? That âIâll never sound like thatâ mind-loop?
Thatâs not proof youâre bad. Itâs envy.
And envy is a compass.
Itâs showing you what you admire, what you secretly want, and what you havenât fully owned in yourself yet.
Most of the time, the problem isnât your voice. Itâs the story youâre singing from.
Try this today:
1ď¸âŁ Write down ONE singer you envy
2ď¸âŁ Pick ONE quality they have youâll start developing on purpose
Letâs turn envy into intention. đŞđź

Your voice doesnât tighten because it wants to make your life difficult.
It tightens because itâs trying to protect you.
When youâre worried about sounding good enough, comparing yourself to other singers, or trying to impress everyone listening, your nervous system gets involved. And when your body doesnât feel safe, your voice responds.
So before you ask, âWhatâs wrong with my technique?â try asking a different question:
What pressure am I carrying into this song?
Sometimes the biggest breakthrough isnât learning another vocal exercise.
Itâs creating enough safety for your real voice to come forward.
⨠Your voice isnât just an instrumentâitâs a reflection of whatâs happening inside you.

Most singers choose coaches based on one thing:
âCan they sing?â
But teaching is a completely different skill.
A great vocal coach should help your brain and body understand what to do â not leave you overwhelmed, dependent, or doubting yourself after every lesson.
The right coach gives you clarity instead of confusion.
Whatâs the BEST or WORST thing a vocal teacher ever said to you?
