🚨When Cristiano Ronaldo Left the World Cup, the Money Went Down: What Is the Message Behind FIFA's Most Valuable Assets?
Qatar's media network Al Jazeera English raised an intriguing question: As soon as Portugal's Cristiano Ronaldo was eliminated from the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the money went down too. That single statement sparked widespread discussion among football fans and sports economists around the world.
The message is clear: Cristiano Ronaldo is not just a footballer—he is an economic powerhouse. His exit from the tournament had an immediate financial impact on FIFA's biggest revenue streams.
Portugal's Elimination and Ronaldo's Farewell
On July 7, 2026, Spain defeated Portugal 1–0 in the Round of 16, ending Portugal's World Cup campaign. The match marked the 41-year-old Cristiano Ronaldo's final FIFA World Cup, as he confirmed after the game:
"Yes, this was my last World Cup. I'm sad to leave this way, but I gave everything I had and I leave with a clear conscience."
Economic Shock: Ticket Prices Dropped by Up to 60%
The first major impact of Ronaldo's exit was seen in the ticket market. According to secondary ticket marketplace TickPick, ticket prices for the World Cup quarterfinals fell sharply after the elimination of both Portugal and the host nation, the United States.
For example, tickets for the Spain vs. Belgium quarterfinal reportedly dropped from around $2,950 to nearly $1,200—a decline of almost 60%.
Media reports suggested that if Portugal—or especially Cristiano Ronaldo—had still been in the tournament, ticket demand and prices would likely have remained significantly higher.
Is Messi FIFA's Last Hope?
American media outlets reported that with Ronaldo and the host nation eliminated, the ticket market cooled considerably. FIFA is now expected to rely heavily on Lionel Messi's popularity to maintain revenue.
According to Al Jazeera, Argentina's group-stage matches were the first to sell out completely, largely because of Messi's enormous popularity in the United States following his move to Major League Soccer (MLS).
Meanwhile, young superstars like Kylian Mbappé and Erling Haaland remain among football's biggest attractions. However, without Ronaldo, FIFA could still face substantial losses in sponsorships, television rights, and matchday revenue.
FIFA's Remaining Valuable Assets
According to Transfermarkt, the most valuable squads among the quarterfinalists are:
France – €1.52 billion
England – €1.36 billion
Spain – €1.22 billion
Among individual players:
Lamine Yamal (Spain) – €200 million
Erling Haaland (Norway) – €200 million
Kylian Mbappé – approximately $230 million
However, these figures still fall short of Ronaldo's estimated $300 million annual earnings and an estimated net worth of $1.2–1.4 billion.
Conclusion: Star Power Is Football's Greatest Asset
Al Jazeera's question ultimately highlights the commercial reality of modern football. Players like Cristiano Ronaldo are far more than goal scorers—they are global brands who drive sponsorships, television audiences, merchandise sales, and fan engagement.
His departure serves as a reminder that the true value of the FIFA World Cup lies not only in the trophy or the host nation, but also in the global appeal of its biggest stars.
When superstars leave, markets react. The spotlight now turns to Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappé, and Erling Haaland to see whether they can fill the commercial and global impact left by Cristiano Ronaldo.

🚨Considering the current Portugal squad, its market value, and overall quality, many football experts and analysts had also labeled Portugal as one of the favorites to win the World Cup. I said the same myself—that this Portugal team was one of the most complete and balanced squads they had ever assembled.
However, from the beginning of the World Cup until their elimination, their performances were extremely average.
Most Pakistani fans only watch the World Cup and don't regularly follow club football, so they don't realize just how outstanding Portugal's midfielders are. At club level, these players consistently dominate games and create countless chances. But in this World Cup, that level of performance was nowhere to be seen.
Portugal played five matches throughout the tournament, and across those five games, their three world-class midfielders created only a handful of meaningful chances. And despite having one of the greatest strikers in football history leading the line, the same pattern appeared after every match: Portugal's midfielders kept circulating the ball in central areas without making enough attacking runs or supplying their striker.
Take the final match against Spain as an example. Throughout the entire game, Cristiano Ronaldo wasn't given a single quality pass inside the opponent's penalty area, nor was he provided with a single accurate aerial cross to attack.
Cristiano Ronaldo is regarded as one of the greatest strikers in football history. If we talk about the Ronaldo of 2008, even his opponents admitted that he was simply unstoppable. Back then, he was known as Sir Alex Ferguson's deadliest weapon. The relationship between Sir Alex and Cristiano was often described as being like that of a father and son.
Then there was Zinedine Zidane at Real Madrid. Whenever the team struggled to score, Zidane's message was simple: "Keep passing the ball to Cristiano." He understood exactly what Ronaldo was capable of and knew that he could change a game at any moment. As long as Cristiano was on the pitch, Real Madrid always believed there was still hope, even in the final minutes.
Carlo Ancelotti once said that "The most dangerous Cristiano Ronaldo is the one who didn't score in the previous match." Like a true predator, his hunger only grew stronger, making him even more dangerous.
Cristiano Ronaldo is the only striker in football history who has scored from virtually every position on the pitch and in every possible way. He has no obvious weakness. If you look at the list of players with the most goals scored using their left foot, Ronaldo is among the very top—even though his left foot is considered his weaker foot. He also holds the record for the most headed goals in football history and is widely regarded as the greatest header of the ball the game has ever seen.
So what advantage did Portugal's world-class midfielders take of having such a striker? Almost none. Their job should have been to keep supplying him with passes—especially crosses and aerial balls, where his heading ability could create goals, corners, and constant pressure on the opposition.
But they didn't.
Honestly, throughout the entire World Cup, I couldn't understand Portugal's approach. What disappoints me most isn't just that Portugal were eliminated—it's that they never truly played to their potential.
In my opinion, despite all the big names and talent in today's squad, the Portugal team that won the UEFA European Championship was actually better as a unit. They may not have had as many star players, but they fought with everything they had. That's one of the reasons Cristiano scored so many goals during that tournament. That team, much like the current Argentina side around Messi, believed in their leader and constantly looked to find him with the ball. ✌️

🚨 Cristiano Ronaldo's World Cup journey may have come to an end... but the Ronaldo legacy is only just beginning. 🇵🇹🐐❤️
While Cristiano Ronaldo's dream of lifting the FIFA World Cup is now part of football history, a new chapter is being written by his son, Cristiano Ronaldo Jr. 🌟
Having already represented Portugal at youth level, Ronaldo Jr. could still be eligible to play internationally for different countries in the future, subject to FIFA's nationality and eligibility rules. His final decision could shape not only his own career but also the future of one of football's most iconic legacies.
The father inspired generations. Now the son has the chance to write his own story.
One legend's World Cup dream may be over... but another Ronaldo's dream is just beginning. ❤️⚽
Do you think Cristiano Ronaldo Jr. will continue his father's legacy and become football's next superstar? 👑🔥👇

🚨💔 When the GREATEST Legends Cried, Their Teammates RUSHED to Them... except for ONE — Cristiano Ronaldo. 🐐🥺⬇️

When Guillermo Ochoa's World Cup journey ended, Mexico's players immediately surrounded their captain with hugs and love. 🤍🇲🇽

When Neymar fell to the ground in tears after Brazil's heartbreaking exit, every teammate rushed to comfort him. 💛🇧🇷

When Lionel Messi cried after Argentina's unforgettable triumph, his teammates embraced him, celebrated with him, and made sure he never stood alone. 🩵🇦🇷

But when Cristiano Ronaldo's greatest dream came to an end... there was silence.

No circle of teammates.

No comforting arms.

No one walking beside the man who had carried Portugal's hopes for over two decades.

He simply turned around... and walked down the tunnel alone, with tears in his eyes and the weight of an entire nation on his shoulders. 💔🇵🇹

That image will stay in football history forever.

This was a player who sacrificed everything for his country. He gave Portugal unforgettable nights, broke impossible records, inspired millions, and wore the badge with unmatched pride. He played through pain, pressure, criticism, and endless expectations—always giving everything he had.

He deserved more than a lonely goodbye.

This isn't about comparing players.

This isn't about trophies.

This isn't about fan rivalries.

It's about humanity.

Every football legend deserves to feel the love, respect, and gratitude of the teammates they fought beside for years.

No matter who you support, watching Cristiano Ronaldo walk away alone was one of the most heartbreaking moments football has ever given us.

Legends may retire.

Records may be broken.

Trophies may gather dust.

But the tears of a man who gave his entire life to his nation will never be forgotten.

Thank you, Cristiano Ronaldo.
You inspired generations, changed football forever, and proved that dreams are worth fighting for until the very last whistle.

Once a legend.
Forever the GOAT. 🐐❤️🇵🇹

Respect Cristiano Ronaldo. Respect every legend. 🙏⚽💔

🚨🗣️ Cristiano Ronaldo: "How many World Cups did Argentina WIN before Messi? 2 times? It's Normal!" 🐐🏆🤷‍♂️⬇️
"Argentina had already won World Cups before Messi. Brazil has a long history of lifting the trophy." 🏆
*"But if Portugal ever wins the World Cup, it would be one of the biggest surprises in football history." 🇵🇹🔥
*"With Portugal, I helped win three major international trophies. Before that, the national team had never achieved those titles." 🐐
"Can the greatest player in history really be judged by just one tournament of six or seven matches?"
What do you think? Is a World Cup the only measure of greatness? 👀⬇️
If you want it to sound more emotional, more viral, or more neutral, I can rewrite it in that style too.
