Yesterday I shared how we design exploration workflows to converge on a drill decision (not just collect more data).

Today, here’s a concrete example of what that looks like in asphalt/bitumen vein exploration — and why remote sensing is often the fastest way to move from “interesting area” to actionable targets.

In the attached interpretation map:

Dark blue = remotely interpreted asphalt veins or vein corridors

Black = a known vein (used as ground truth)

Light blue = a key fault \ structural control

What mattered most was not a single index or image product. The interpretation was the integration of spectral and structural evidence:

Remote sensing picked out the right corridors

We mapped subtle surface expression and continuity of vein-like features across rough terrain and variable cover.

Structure controlled the mineralization

The interpreted vein network aligned with a major fault zone.

Verification closed the loop

Field mapping later confirmed the predicted vein positions and trends, and drilling validated the model, reducing targeting uncertainty and saving time compared to blind step-outs.

Remote sensing isn’t “pretty maps.” When used properly, it becomes a decision engine; narrowing the search space and ranking targets before boots hit the ground.

A lot of exploration teams collect good data — then lose time because the workflow isn’t designed to converge on a drill decision.

At Matrix GeoTechnologies Ltd., we use a staged targeting flow that deliberately moves from wide-area screening to high-confidence ranking:

1. Remote sensing and structure mapping

We start by outlining alteration patterns, lithological contrasts, and structural corridors to frame the geological “rules of the game.”

2. Geology first: mapping and deposit model framing

We start by defining the geological “rules of the game” (lithologies, stratigraphy, alteration styles, structural setting, and the most likely deposit model). This prevents chasing geophysical anomalies with no geological rationale.

3. UAV magnetics (rapid coverage, high resolution)

Magnetics helps reveal buried structures, intrusives, and contacts.

4. Geochemistry

Systematic sampling and QA/QC turn the interpretation into measurable evidence: pathfinders, alteration vectors, zonation patterns, and anomaly coherence across the system.

5. AI-assisted interpretation

We accelerate feature extraction (lineaments, domains, edges, structural trends) and reduce subjectivity by consistently highlighting patterns that matter.

6. Ground geophysics and detailed geochemistry (validation and vectoring)

This is where we test hypotheses: confirm anomaly sources, discriminate false positives, and add vectors toward mineralization.

7. Integrated 3D model → ranked drill targets

We bring all lines of evidence into a single 2D/3D interpretation, then rank targets based on coherence, risk, and expected payoff.

The outcome is simple: fewer guesses, faster convergence, better targets.

If you have legacy datasets or a new area that needs rapid screening, let’s talk.
