Congratulations to Michael Figliomeni and Grace Burton, our 2026 Fountain Tire District Junior Champions!

We had a fantastic two days of tournament golf across Chapples and Whitewater, with our young players competing, learning, and gaining valuable tournament experience.

Michael captured the Junior Boys Championship by just one shot over Tristan Warywoda, making a strong comeback on the final nine holes. He finished with rounds of 73 and 75. Grace won the Junior Girls Championship over Samantha Sacchetti, finishing with rounds of 77 and 86.

More local talent competing on the national stage! Shoutout to Jay Johnstone for competing this week at the Canadian Men’s Mid-Amateur Championship in Brantford, Ontario.

And a big shoutout to Rob Atatise, Roy Mannila, Rob Mannila, and Ash Nate for competing in the Ontario Indigenous Championship. Special congratulations to Rob on his 5th-place!

Registration is now open for the 101st Teleco District Amateur Championship! This year, the TBDGA is proud to introduce a Women’s Division, open to female golfers with a handicap index of 20.0 or lower.

All competitors will play 54 holes over three rounds: September 5: Strathcona, September 6: Fort William, and September 7: Whitewater.

The field will be limited to the first 48 paid male golfers and the first 12 paid female golfers, with a waitlist available once the field is full.

The 2026 Thunder Bay District Men’s Amateur Champion will also earn an exemption into the 2027 Ontario Amateur Championship.

Registration closes August 30, 2026 at 6:00 PM EST.

Flighted tee times, rules, and pace-of-play policy will be shared before the start of the first round. Play in the women’s division will follow after the men.

Congratulations to Robbie Untinen on being named the new Head Coach of the Confederation College Thunderhawks Golf Team!

Robbie is a champion golfer across our district and is one of the most dedicated people when it comes to growing and supporting local sport. A former professional golfer himself, Robbie brings a wealth of experience, knowledge and passion to the role.

We know he will do an outstanding job building on the recent success of the Thunderhawks golf program and helping the team continue to grow and compete at a high level.

Congratulations, Robbie, and best of luck in the new role!

Registration for the 2026 Fountain Tire Thunder Bay District Junior Championship is now open.

Dates: August 27-28, 2026

This event is open to boys and girls, and players will be flighted into Junior, Juvenile, Bantam and Peewee divisions. Round 1 will be played at Chapples GC, and Round 2 will be played at Whitewater GC.

Entry fee is $80, and lunches will be provided to the players.

To register, please visit www.tbdga.com/schedule. Registration will close on Sunday, August 23, 2026 at 6:00 PM EST.

Congratulations to Jack Moro on his play at the 121st Canadian Men’s Amateur Championship. Jack finished 33rd out of 264 competitors, highlighted by a final-round 66 to vault up the leaderboard. This is the second straight year Jack has made the cut at our national amateur championship. He finished the event at Mickelson National with scores of 74-70-75-66.

Shoutout also to Jeff Hunter and Jordan Walford who represented our region in Calgary.

Congratulations to Karen Saarimaki and Justin Gosselin-Archer for winning this weekends Mixed Invitational Tournament with a score of 128. Second overall went to Frank and Abbey Hildebrandt with a score of 136.

Second flight winners were Cody and Michelle Echum (144) followed by Denis and Paulette Lebel (152).

Another stellar week in Manitoba for Thunder Bay! Congrats to Rob Atatise on finishing 8th overall at the Manitoba Mid-Am and 2nd in its Mid-Masters Division (40+). Rob shot scores of 74-71-74 over 54 holes at Quarry Oaks Golf Course in Steinbach. Also in the field representing the Fort William Country Club was Jason Johnstone, who tied for 17th overall. Great playing, gents!
