The health and wellness world has become incredibly complicated. We track our sleep. Measure our recovery. Optimize our nutrition. Study longevity. Chase the latest science. And then there’s my wife’s 74-year-old Uncle Kirk. Living quietly in Advocate, Nova Scotia, Kirk seems to have figured out his own algorithm for a good life. Hard physical work. Real food. Great sleep. Very little time staring at a phone. A deep connection to where he lives and the people around him. And an almost endless supply of optimism. But the thing I admire most about Kirk is something you can’t measure with a wearable: Gratitude. He genuinely appreciates what’s right in front of him. Researchers will continue searching for the ingredients of a long, healthy and meaningful life. And they should. But I sometimes wonder if we’re making parts of it more complicated than they need to be. Maybe some of the answers have been sitting on a deck overlooking Advocate Harbour all along. RECRUITED🏀 | Women’s Basketball Panthers welcome defensive standout JOHANNA GERLACH

A native of Hachborn, Germany, Gerlach brings valuable international experience and was recognized as a member of the 2025-26 NJCAA All-Region (South) Defensive Team following an outstanding sophomore season with McCook Community College.

A versatile and competitive guard, Gerlach makes her presence felt on both ends of the floor. With strong defensive instincts, a relentless motor, and the ability to guard multiple positions, she thrives on disrupting opponents while embracing a team-first approach.

"Johanna is a very strong on-ball defender who brings great energy and effort on the court. Her enthusiasm for the game will be contagious to all around her. We look forward to welcoming Johanna to our community.” – Head Coach Matt Gamblin
