Did you know the Saskatoon Fire Department had its very own band?
Pictured here is the Saskatoon Fire Department Band, made up of members of the department and photographed alongside one of SFD’s aerial apparatus. Seated front and centre is Fire Chief T.G. Lennon, who served as Chief from 1947 until 1972.
Fire department bands were once an important part of fire service tradition, representing their departments at parades, civic events, ceremonies and memorials while strengthening the connection between firefighters and the communities they served.
One particularly meaningful detail can be seen on the banner at the centre of the photograph:
“Saskatoon Fire Dept. Band Dedicated in Memory of Capt. E. Millichouse.”
From the formal uniforms and white gloves to the department insignia proudly displayed on the drums, this photo offers a great glimpse into another chapter of Saskatoon’s firefighting history.
While we haven’t confirmed the exact date of this photograph, the people pictured and Chief Lennon’s tenure place it between 1958 and 1972, likely during the 1960s.

Today we are talking about firefighters turnout pants! These pants are built as a three-layer system, which include an outer shell, moisture barrier and thermal barrier! Each layer plays a critical role in protecting firefighters on the job.
The reinforced knees are not just for durability. Firefighters spend plenty of time crouching, kneeling and crawling, so extra reinforcement helps provide additional protection in one of the areas most exposed to heat and wear. Because when the job gets hot, the gear has to work to protect our members!

On October 8, 1996, a massive fire engulfed Uncle Ed’s Furniture in Saskatoon. Captured here is a rare “fire tornado”, a phenomenon that can occur when intense heat combines with turbulent, fire-driven wind conditions.
The six-storey brick-and-timber warehouse was completely destroyed in the blaze. Nearly 30 years later, the fire remains a memorable part of Saskatoon’s history.

Recently, our Technical Rescue Team and Water Rescue Team came together for a joint training exercise, simulating the rescue of an injured person from the Broadway Bridge. Rescue technicians safely rappelled the patient from the bridge to a waiting boat, where they were transported to shore for continued care by the Fire Department or EMS.
These realistic training scenarios help ensure our members are prepared to respond safely and effectively when every second counts.
A huge thank you to our IAFF Local 80 members for their dedication and participation in this highly technical exercise. Your commitment to ongoing training helps keep our community safe. 👏 Stay tuned for video footage of this training 👀
