The Cabot Square Project, based out of the Montreal Urban Aboriginal Community Strategy NETWORK, is focused on building a strategy addressing Aboriginal homelessness in Montréal on a systemic level. The project began in Cabot Square, an urban park in Montreal downtown west that has historically been used by many First Nations and especially Inuit people. The project was intended to respond to and
address issues relating to co-habitation, relations with police, belonging, and safety. Since then, and with funding from the McConnell Family Foundation, the project is scaling from the park up to Montréal. There many exciting initiatives that are coming out of the strategy in close collaboration with Network committees and community groups. These initiatives include: a restorative practices project that is being implemented in Cabot Square, arts and cultural events in Cabot Square during the summer 2016, an advisory committee of community members who will inform the strategy, trainings to service providers, the creation of a training manual for police and a cultural safety curriculum that can be used for many types of service providers, and the first steps in building an Aboriginal justice center in Montreal. This exciting project has the potential to set an example for systemic change in urban Aboriginal settings by bringing together a broad spectrum of community members and groups and government to creatively work together to affect large scale change.

Le projet du square Cabot, une initiative du RÉSEAU pour la stratégie urbaine de communauté autochtone de Montréal, vise à développer une stratégie concernant les sans-abri autochtones à Montréal. Le projet a démarré au square Cabot, un parc urbain de la partie ouest du centre-ville de Montréal, qui historiquement a été utilisé par plusieurs peuples des Premières Nations, principalement les Inuits. Ce projet se veut une réponse aux problèmes en lien avec la cohabitation, les relations avec la police, le sentiment d’appartenance et la sécurité. Depuis, grâce au financement de la Fondation de la famille McConnell, le projet d’un parc s’est étendu à l’ensemble de Montréal. Il y a plusieurs initiatives prometteuses nées de cette stratégie en collaboration étroite avec les comités et les groupes communautaires du Réseau. Ces initiatives comprennent : un projet de pratiques de réparation implanté au square Cabot, des événements artistiques et culturels durant l’été 2016, la mise sur pied d’un comité consultatif constitué de membres de la communauté pour informer les dirigeants de la stratégie, des formations aux fournisseurs de services, la création d’un manuel de formation
pour la police incluant un programme de sécurité culturelle adapté à tout genre de fournisseurs de services, et les premières étapes visant le développement d’un centre de justice autochtone à Montréal.
